When the clothes fall due to uneven loads the drum moves up and down whereas if the drum is vertical it doesn't. This means there is an extra direction of movement to resist leading to stress in the associated components such as the belt thing and electrical motor on its bracket thingy that holds it in place.

Before you know it you'll have that annoying Calgon man in your kitchen trying to convince you it's lime scale.

Don't test me man I've been thinking about this all week.

Front loaders are inherently better for a couple reasons.

They get clothes cleaner with less energy because the agitation of the rolling motion is more efficient than that of the top loader,that just "mixes" the clothes with that twisty thing in the middle.

It`s also easier to unload FLs,pulling stuff from the front than it is to left clothes up and out.Front loaders don`t tangle clothes either like a TL can.

And with the new stackable units,it`s a snap to unload the washer on top into the dryer below.

Craigslist is full of good used units

OK folks, I'm sold on this front loader. I threw a body pillow and two blankets in the same load, forgot to put in ANY detergent, and everything came out clean. Best of all, the machine did not die. It did not even balk.

I had to buy a new washing machine last year.  Unfortunately, I had only a few hundred dollars.  Rather than buy yet another used machine, I bought new, though I couldn't afford the one I wanted.  I want a front loader with matching dryer.  But I had to get the washing machine in a hurry--so I got a top loader that I could afford.  I will get the matching pair in another year or two--after I redo my electrical wiring and maybe remodel the kitchen first.
