You're in luck. There is lots of BDSM in Upstate NY. The highest concentration is in Rochester. The Rochester Kink Society has lots of events, play parties, and classes. As you know, Rochester is an easy drive from Syracuse. Just drive right up I-90.
If you prefer to stay in Syracuse, the Syracuse D/s Society is probably the best option for you. They have a group on Fetlife, so you may want to go there to check out their calendar of events. There is also a group on Fetlife called Syracuse BDSM Mentors. It is for people just like you. You can be mentored by a seasoned BDSM veteran.
Lastly, the Buffalo Kink Society also has a full schedule of events. So you might want to check them out as well.

Also, there is a group in Albany, and one in Ithaca. And if you feel up to it, you can even drive to Toronto for BDSM events. I've attended quite a few events up there.
Bottom line: So you should never lack for BDSM opportunities or people to mentor you if you are willing to get out and attend a munch or two.
