Toppingfrmbottom -> I applied for the disabled paratransit bus service and was approved! (5/12/2012 8:28:09 PM)

It's going to be a great asset in mobility and independence! I was thinking of a 1 month pass for 125 dollars, if the gym qualified as a bus possible ride, I'd take it to the gym while daddy was at work, maybe everyday or certainly 3 xs a week , and then to school everyday if i went back, then to all my dr's appointments, and then to the therapeutic social class every week it'd be worth it, and my dad said if i went back to school he'd be more than happy to pay part of the 125 every month. And Daddy would pitch in too a bit on the cost. I am really excited about the mobility and independence possibilities.

I just renewed my disability bus card for Austin. I pay half price ($1) for 24 hours of rides on Cap Metro. I could get the special transit services, but I don't have doctors down there in Austin. Mom is my driver here at home and we have the same doctor so if one of us gets sick, we come in together (the doctor keeps taking my blood for my depokate levels for MHMR). We go to town 1 or twice a week for groceries, with medical procedures taking place in Tyler.

Sharhar, this service comes strait to my door, then drops me off right at the door of where I am going. It's 5 dollars one way or 10 round trip. You have to be 75 n older or deemed unable to ride regular buses due to a disability, some or all the time.

In NJ, people on Medicaid qualify for transportation to their doctor's appointments through a company called Logisticare.  I know they are in several other states as well.  There is no fee for this service and all that is needed to qualify is being on Medicaid.  It is only for medical appointments, but it still makes it much easier to plan going to the doctor.  You must provide two days notice to schedule a ride, but that isn't that big of a deal.

There are also some ways to work with it to manage some errands with it.  For instance, my eye doctor is in the local Walmart, so it is easy to schedule the pick up and return times to allow me to do some shopping.  Also, you can add picking up prescriptions to your trip, and if you get your scripts filled at the local grocery store, you can adjust the times so you have time to get some groceries.

Since I live out in what is basically the "boondocks," the County has their own bus service as well that isn't like a major transit service.  This service is also free to disabled people, and while where it can take you is limited, it's still a decent service.  They have a day where they go to the grocery store as well.  I've used this service for grocery shopping since I don't drive. as well as being able to take it to the county seat, where I can get dropped off at the Walmart there, or several other stores and strip malls.

If I lived in a different county, there would be train and bus passes that would help.

Anyway, the point is that you should check with your local Social Services to find out if something like Logisticare is available in your area, as well as seeing what other free transportation services might be available to disabled people.

My neighbors sister rides to drs free, but that's probably because she's mentally retarded n has the iq of a 10 yo her sister keeps saying. So she has an Alta regional worker and stuff.
I don't qualify for it though, but yes it never occurred to me to look into programs!
I'll look into the program, I'd love dr appoints 4 free.

LafayetteLady -> RE: I applied for the disabled paratransit bus service and was approved! (5/12/2012 10:50:33 PM)

The programs through your local Social Services are usually for people on Medicaid, and disabled is disabled, they aren't looking to see who is more disabled to qualify.

What really pisses me off is that lazy Social Services workers don't tell people about these programs to start with.  If you don't ask what is available, they don't bother to tell you.  The end result is that people either don't get proper medical treatment because they can't get there, or they spend money on taxis that they really can't afford to do.

I would suggest that you go to your local Social Services Office (NOT Social Security) and ask them about transportation programs for medical transport.  You already receive food stamps, but you could ask about local food pantries, and what other transportation options might be available.  Essentially, anything you can think of that you would like to find help with, ask them.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: I applied for the disabled paratransit bus service and was approved! (5/12/2012 11:56:55 PM)

Actually no I don't. I can't have ssi and food stamps both. The state of ca has the highest ssi rates so they figure you don't need fs. And daddy makes to much money for foodstamps or low income assistance.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: I applied for the disabled paratransit bus service and was approved! (5/13/2012 12:14:53 AM)

I also got Medicare medical and Cade as a minor, so I didn't have to apply as an adult or be told anything. But I should dig through perks n stuff.since you brought stuff to my attention.

LafayetteLady -> RE: I applied for the disabled paratransit bus service and was approved! (5/13/2012 12:21:19 AM)

So you only have Medicare, not also Medicaid?  There is a difference.  There are few services available to people with just Medicare.  You also should be checking to see about whether or not you can get SSD, and if not, why not.

Basically, I would recommend you go to the local Social Services agency and ask them what services you do qualify for, in regards to Medicaid, transportation and anything else you can think of.  Yes, it will be a pain in the ass to spend a whole day at Social Services, but you never know if there is more help available unless you ask.  I don't really know anything about California, so I can't suggest anything else.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: I applied for the disabled paratransit bus service and was approved! (5/13/2012 12:25:11 AM)

I have both I think. I don't know much about it. I just know I don't pay for drs, and my pills are 1.10 . I get ssi because I am disabled in the eyes of the program. I don't know how SSd would be diff in that case but I'll ask. Here you don't go through social services, you go through the social security office..

I understand that it is annoying but to be perfectly honest, those SS workers are usually underpaid and overworked and they're mainly there to answer questions and show solutions to the most important problems, not to play nurse maid and hold the hands of everybody and tell them everything what might be possible - it's the job of somebody requiring assistance to ask questions like "How about help with the transportation fare?" etc.

Picture yourself in the shoes of those workers - you're there with a workload, you aren't getting much thanks and not really a big cheque, you try to help with the most important questions, it seems reasonable to expect that people will ask you what they need to know, and possibly do a bit of research themselves as a lot of answers are available online....
It's a bit like people working in an unemployment office, they are super busy just letting people know what paper work they need, to check the paperwork, trying to place them in jobs, they can't really hold their hand and tell each and everyone what interview training is available - unless the people ask for it.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: I applied for the disabled paratransit bus service and was approved! (5/13/2012 9:38:29 AM)

Ok, this is what the official page says. I don't qualify because other than the one job i had for i don't know how long it was maybe a month tho, i haven't worked a day in my life, at a job where you pay taxes.

The Social Security disability insurance program (sometimes referred to as SSDI) pays benefits to you and certain family members[u] if you worked long enough and paid Social Security taxes also may qualify for benefits on your earnings record if he or she has a disability that started before age 22.They pay disability benefits under two programs:

* The Social Security disability insurance program pays benefits to you and certain family members
if you worked long enough and paid Social Security taxes.

LadyConstanze -> RE: I applied for the disabled paratransit bus service and was approved! (5/13/2012 11:08:33 AM)

What about the bit if the disability started before age 22? Why don't you ask them directly that since you don't qualify for one on account of never having worked in a job where you paid taxes, if there might be another program or alternative available for you.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: I applied for the disabled paratransit bus service and was approved! (5/13/2012 11:13:48 AM)

I have it, I am on SSI and for that you need not have worked just be unable to work or support yourself. It comes with a few draw backs like you can't have a bunch of assets you could easily sell off for shit loads of money, like a house or properties, or high end stocks or cd's or more than one car, because you're entitled to just the one, but the help is better than the draw backs at my age i have none of that stuff lol. unless you mean other assistant programs other than SSI, in that case on Monday i will be looking into the free ride program thing for people on medical and all the other stuff mentioned, outside of SSD.

Actually, no it isn't there job to simply answer basic questions.  It is there job to let people know what services are available to them.  For instance, they are aware when a client doesn't drive or have a car, so they know that transportation might be an issue.

As for them being "underpaid," they aren't.  They are government workers, who are also unionized.  They chose to go into the field they are in, and chose to work for the office they did.  Can you imagine telling your clients or your boss that you have too much work to do to actually do your job?  The majority of these people would be fired if they worked in the corporate world because they wouldn't have the perks they have in a government position.

Incidentally, it is also inappropriate for them to respond with "I don't know" when the person requiring assistance asks what is available.  It is nothing like working in the unemployment office, because the requirements are different.  People who work in Social Services are Social Workers, not paper pushers like unemployment.  They specifically studied for the purpose of helping people.

In my local Social Services office, there are some that are great at what they do.  They have been there for years, and if they don't know the answer to something they find out.  Then there are others who just can't be bothered.  Some have been there for years and are jaded, others are young and just want to do as little as possible.

Believing you are "underpaid" for your job is never an appropriate excuse for not doing your job.

No, California has Social Service Offices.

TFB:
LafayetteLady is correct--the local Social Services office is different from Social Security. Social Security is a federal program--the benefits are federal. Social Services has two levels--local and State, depending on where you live, your social service office may be state employees..or local govt employees..or a combination of both. In some places. like here, some types of services are managed by local health depts in coordination with Dept of Social Services. (transportation is one of them)

As far as the lack of customer service--I work closely with the DSS side of things because they are often the victims of threats. Suspicious packages, threats of violence, etc. Most recently, an infant was stabbed in DSS by a distraught family member, right in front of two DSS employees in the city. I have witnessed first hand how horrible and rude their clients can be to them.

On the other side of that--I have seen very poor customer service. I'm working with leadership to change this--if they treated the clients better, it can reduce the risks of violence/threats and create a safer environment for all of us. THe other sad truth--often the workers do NOT know what the other divisions in their own dept actually do and don't know to tell their clients about it. Not all caseworkers are social workers--in fact, many of them aren't.

Social workers, as underpaid as they are, are "expensive" from a govt perspective and often they will pay a caseworker even less. So unfortunately....you have a paper-pushing govt clerk who may just see their job as a job (one that gets a lot of abuse) and becomes hardened as a result. I've been on the other side--I've applied for food stamps and GA--sat in that horrible waiting room without food or water fo 8 hours, only to be denied in the harshest, rudest way. We're talking 20 years ago, but I was the loud one who threatened to kick the caseworkers ass and had to run off with security chasing me. I never forgot how degraded and humiliated I felt, and try to have compassion for those coming into our building complex.
