I get it. I've rescued a few, and that's probably a dumb and dangerous thing to do.

When I was young and knew everything.

I'd do the same, animal in need is an animal in need... And raccoons are so cute, hard to not get sucked into it...

Things being different, I could totally see myself adopting one and having it vaccinated and taming it, I once adopted a baby lynx in the belief that it was a big cat with funny ears who lost the tail, fantastic pet and super affectionate, never had a problem with it, however the Alsatian in the area who loved killing cats was terrified of felines after one run in with grown up Spock...

Not a good idea, for multiple reasons.

Well, not sure if rescuing a cat that was going to be put down and turned out to be a lynx was a good idea - made a great pet... Most people would think taking on rescue dobermans isn't a good idea, they're the most fantastic dogs anybody could ever wish for (though should be renamed into "retirement fund")

In case I would find an abandoned or orphaned raccoon, I wouldn't bother too much about legalities but how to keep the little bugger alive, and if I read the site correctly, feeding and raising them isn't illegal. I wouldn't ever attempt to take one from a litter.

I loved these critters, even though they are rodents and I (very briefly) even considered studying zoology in my junior year, as a result.

Racoons are not rodents. Racoons are related to weasels and bears.

about 35 yrs ago my neighbors went on vacation and forgot to close the fireplace flue. they came back two weeks later to find the house totally ransacked, kitchen destroyed, they thought they'd been vandalized until the momma racooon tried to protect her babies. they ran out of the house and we all gathered around to watch the mother go back up the chimney with each one of her four kits and then carry them down a tree and disappear with them into the woods. the house was a disaster area but it was an interesting sight!

LadyHibiscus -> RE: I thought they were noctural... (5/15/2012 7:09:32 AM)

We have critter caps on the chimney. Those buggers can climb!

You don't read the site correctly. Raising WILD ones IS illegal. Where they ARE legal (not many places), people get domestic ones from breeders.

I live in the country. This comes up a lot. The animal's best chance is for you to leave it alone.

If you make it a pet, it's the animal who will end up paying. You didn't read the site carefully. One bite and that suckers gonna be taken and killed. It can never go back to the wild. And you have no experience with racoons.

Be a caring, compassionate friend to wildlife--leave it be. It will do better and be happier.

LC,
If You don't have small children and want something very playful that you can interact with, why not try a ferret rescue league?

LadyConstanze -> RE: I thought they were noctural... (5/15/2012 1:20:49 PM)

angelica, I have 2 dobies, 2 cats and a pet rat - all rescues, I really do not need another pet, as I said, they just showed up and I am not feeding them or encouraging them to make themselves at home...

You didn't read me correctly or you don't want to understand... In case I would find an orphaned raccoon baby in danger of starving, I wouldn't let it be (i.e. starve to death), I am not planning on grabbing random wild life and making it pets. Hope that is clear enough...

Muttling -> RE: I thought they were noctural... (5/15/2012 2:15:41 PM)

And I thought racoons only cum at night.

Yeah. That's it.

I should have known.

They just didn't get the memo that they are nocturnal. But they are really enthusiastic fuckers and I wouldn't be surprised if they find out how to switch the jacuzzi on and I find them in the hot tub with a bunch of cocktails and fornicating...

DesFIP -> RE: I thought they were noctural... (5/16/2012 6:54:26 PM)

Reminds me of an old friend who had a cat and a cat door. Until the day came he woke up in the middle of the night and went into the kitchen for a snack. There at the cat food bowl was thie biggest raccoon he had ever seen. Or at least it looked like that to a man without any clothes on. Next day the cat door was nailed shut.

If you find an orphaned raccoon call the police. They will contact a wildlife rehabilitator who is licensed to care for the animal. Which you are not.

LadyConstanze -> RE: I thought they were noctural... (5/16/2012 8:29:09 PM)

I don't plan to find one.

Am I supposed to say "Thank you Mistress or something"? Can I see your license for giving me orders?
