They are really cute, but I am not sure if I was prepared for animal porn at noon... And nope, not feeding them, actually making sure that the rubbish bins are all closed, as cute as they are, they're rabies carriers and quite destructive little buggers...

I know I shouldn't touch them or feed them (won't do that) but they are so funny, come up and stare at me, don't seem to be the least intimidated.... And they don't do much more than fornicating and making quite a lot of noise...

After having dealt with a duck invasion of the pool (and extensive pool cleaning as they pooped all over the place, it's not shit through a goose, it's shit through ducks) now the racoons. I gotta send for my dobies, they'd make great pool guards, though the girl would possibly decide the racoons are potential puppies and get a bad scratch.

Technically they are nocturnal, but they are well known for being out in the day looking for food, especially in areas where people are known to feed them, or leave trash around, which amounts to the same thing.

I imagine that raccoons in LA are like the coyotes, very dependent on humans for most of their food.

They tend not to be easily intimidated and can be very cute. You do not, however, want to corner one.

watch out for that, you don't want your dogs fighting a coon. they may win, but will get messed up.

Lady Constanze, whatever you do,do NOT let your dobies follow the racoon into the pool.Racoons will attack a dog in the water and wrap themselves around the dogs head and drown them.I saw it happen to a friends coon dog,it was not pretty.

I'd hope that the coons would just run away when they see the size of the dogs, but my dogs are a bit stupid, the girl thinks cats, rabbits and other smaller furries are potential puppies. I'm making sure they can't come into the house, but the little buggers come up to the big sliding glass doors and stare right at me, when I try to shoe them away, they sit on their hind legs and give me the "So aren't you going to feed us?" look, and they are making a lot of noise outside right now. Well if they aren't getting any food, I hope they go away.

Raccoon populations here are cyclical. They'll build up and then rabies decimates them and then it builds up again. But I go on the assumption that if they aren't afraid of people, then they're rabid.

And I've given up trying to keep them out of the garbage. I keep it in the garage until trash day.

To be honest, no experience with them, so you might know more about them being rabid, but to me they just seem to be very used to humans and to pools, one of the little fuckers actually went into the pool for a swim, with me thinking the poor bugger will drown and grabbing the net the pool cleaners use to help him with the pole as I thought he or she might not be able to climb out the tiled walls of the pool - little bugger had the stairs perfectly figured out, ignored the pole, walked out, shook himself and sat on his hind legs and made funny clicky noises and then sniffed around and behaved just like my dogs when they expect a treat.

I went out into the garden a while ago because I contemplated swimming for an hour or so before I go to bed and they were there again, so I walk around and they just walk behind be, I felt like a mother duck, just not followed by ducks but by coons... Went back in and they are now lined up outside the sliding class doors and they are staring at me...

Oh and I had a wrapped granola bar I wanted to have as a snack, went to go shopping on my skates in the afternoon and when I came back one of the buggers had grabbed it from the table outside and he was unwrapping it (and a good deal quicker than I can) and then just sat there and scoffed it. They're a bunch of thieving little buggers, but very cute. I wonder if one can vaccinate a coon and tame it....

Thank you, my dobies are still back in the UK and I'll be joining them soon again, might come back with them but everything is still up in the air, but I am not really worried about that as the girl is the typical dobie with "I hate to get my paws wet - it's raining outside, I think I hold it for a while, you're not serious about making me walk in the rain? I have a pedigree, don't you know, an umbrella for me would be quite suitable..." The boy (bless his cotton socks and limited brains) would possibly drop a ball in front of them and scare them with manic tail wagging and bouncing up and down "Hello potential new friend, wanna play?"

I have the distinctive suspicion that the coons would not like their sizes, European dobies tend to be a bit taller and sturdier than their American cousins (fuck, that's how I feel myself in LA - not the taller part but the sturdy bit)

No, C.  They do not care about size.  They are really quite brave.  I had thought I could scare them off, but they really just look at you.

And, don't think you can tame them.  It's a lovely thought, but they really aren't made that way.

I got 2 of them staring at me now, made sure the shed in the garden is locked, read up on them and they are destructive little buggers, they do scamper a bit when I use the towel and wave it, but most of the time they just stare at me with that "Hey, where's food?" look (must resist, must resist) or they are fornicating, small wonder they're always hungry, they're fucking in average every 10 minutes but it seems rather brief
