(CNN) – A well-known, openly gay supporter of Mitt Romney in New York has decided to withdraw his support for Romney and back President Barack Obama instead.

The clincher: Romney's stance on same-sex marriage.

"I feel that I no longer wish to support your presidential campaign and ask that you please return the maximum contribution that I gave to you last year," Bill White wrote in a letter addressed to the former Massachusetts governor and obtained by CNN.

"You have chosen to be on the wrong side of history and I do not support your run for president any longer," White added.

CNN contacted the Romney campaign but did not receive a response.

White is the chairman and CEO of the New York-based consulting firm Constellations Group. He was previously the president of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum – the cultural and educational institution whose major presence is the floating World War II Intrepid aircraft carrier sitting on the Hudson River. White told CNN he has advocated on behalf of injured and fallen veterans for 20 years - being awarded the Meritorious Public Service Award from the Coast Guard and from the Navy.

White told CNN he is a registered independent who has supported both Republicans and Democrats in the past, including former presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. FEC records show that White contributed to both Republicans and Democrats over the years, including Hillary Clinton in 2008. Most recently, White gave $2,500 to Romney for President, Inc., according to FEC records.

White began his letter to Romney stating, "I am currently a max donor to your 2012 presidential campaign." He did not fundraise for the Romney campaign, though he said his partner and some friends also contributed to Romney.

In his letter, White goes on to mention the president's public announcement of his personal support for same-sex marriage last week.

"Several days later this past Saturday to a packed stadium of young college students you made the following statement that 'Marriage is only between one man and one woman,'" White wrote, referring to Romney's recent commencement address to Liberty University, an evangelical school in Lynchburg, Virginia.

"I believe that you will do as you now say and try to force a constitutional amendment which would attempt to make my own legal and blessed marriage null and void."

In an interview with CNN, White explained his stance.

"I felt we gave 'Hope and Change' a chance and I was looking for something different," White said.

"Quite frankly, I was not supporting Barack Obama – I was supporting Mitt Romney. And my support is not just words or my vote, it's also putting my money where my mouth is."

White said he does not agree with the president on fiscal policy – something he sides more with Romney on.

"I just think we're spending probably money that we don't have," he said.

And yet, White said: "I'm looking at the television screen one day and I see my president – whether I'm Republican or Democrat, he is my president…and I'm looking at him doing one thing, one day. And two days later, I'm looking at a guy who I'm supporting for president, and who I want to be my president and who I've given my money to, to be president, saying something I didn't think he would be saying."

CNN pressed White: Why now, given that Romney's stance is not new?

"I had a very visceral reaction to him – he had a great opportunity… to get on the right side of history," White responded. "And to be someone to the country that helps to unite us, versus what divides us. And I just think his very proactive intention to pounce on this issue now has sent me to the other side."

"Now, I feel like he's declared war on my marriage. And I could just sit back and not say anything. Or I could do something about it. And I've chosen to do something about it."

In fairness there is brief mention about the one verifiable black minister in baltimore who withdrew support. Though we have thigh high boots on the ground there to tell us the actual impact. don't we?

Yeah, but just the week before rassmussen had willard at 7.

I think it's great that we live in a country where you are free to support which ever man you feel will do the best job. But to turn around and ask for your money back is just stupid. Maybe next time he should wait and make sure he really wants to back someone before he starts handing out checks.

fucktoyprincess -> RE: Why should servant have to wait for November (5/15/2012 5:47:29 AM)

I'm glad at least one gay Romney supporter is seeing the error of his ways.

But good luck getting his money back. I think this is a valuable lesson in only put your money behind the things you actually care about.

All of you who claim to be socially liberal, but who support Republican policy because of fiscal conservatism need to consider that the long range impact of the culture wars is actually going to be much worse than the impact of this temporary downturn in the economy. Economic fluctuations are a reality and a given. The economy will resolve itself (it will resolve itself faster with government spending), but it will resolve itself. But the culture wars could doom humanity to another 1600 years of the Dark Ages....who is even going to care about the economy at that point? So truly sad how people continuously miss the forest for the trees.

Ron, we sorted it out ... what Rassmussen is measuring, is how many more inches you can take than you're opponent. We determined the Romney measurement was five short of what he prefers.

I don't see willard as the type of guy who gives money back....I maybe wrong

Moonhead -> RE: Why should servant have to wait for November (5/15/2012 8:40:19 AM)

Unless he's forced to, of course he won't.
We'll probably have Faux and the rest of NI demanding that Bill White be burned at the stake for even suggesting that Romney should return his donation, if they cover this...

It's a statement, not a real expectation.

Though if I were Romney, I'd refund it, for public relations purposes. It's a lousy $2500.

Anyone who thinks the guy publicly asking for his money back, was actually expecting to get his money back, isn`t reading very deeply.

The whole point of the exercise wasn`t the money but the public rejection of Mittens after being a sincere supporter of the governor in the past.

Simple math would help here. Gay population is about 2% of the total, and most of them vote Democrat anyway. Why should Romney worry?

Moonhead -> RE: Why should servant have to wait for November (5/15/2012 3:40:55 PM)

It's actually more like 10%.
(And small wonder they vote Democrat with the Repukes pulling shit like this.)

That IS pretty fucking simple math there fellow. Simple as in not even close to an appropriate way to calculate ANYTHING to do with gay people.

1) The Williams Institute (UCLA) Said 4% last april
2)Here's an article indicating that nobody really knows BUT suggests the people wielding the 2% are in essence right wing debunkers. Let me be the first to say, I am not at all shocked you came in with that number.
3) This article in the NYT Debunks Your Debunkery

See in the end, it has little to do with this mystical errant number you provide. It has to do with a wide variety of reasons that Americans of all stripes have to support it or not.
Why not just let the Americans decide their political matters?
We'd all be happy to hear from you about the goings on in Ottawa.

It doesn't really matter if the gay population is 2%, 4%, 10%...what matters is they all have people who love them. I support marriage equality because my son is gay (I would probably support it regardless, but it is an issue that hits home) and I'd like for him to have the same the rights and privileges as his sister or myself.

Did everybody hear about Betty White's endorsement of Obama? I agree endorsement don't mean much, but Betty and her statement on the gay marriage issue (she is for marriage equality) can get both the youth vote and the senior vote for Obama. Everybody loves Betty!!

Marini -> RE: Why should servant have to wait for November (5/15/2012 7:39:48 PM)

I don't know about you, but these days the pre-election hoopla seems to begin right after the election.

It seems to me, like the campaign has been going on for almost 4 years!
The Republicans have been campaigning hard for a good 2- 3 years.

We will be tired by election time, and I guarantee you whichever side loses, will begin chattering about the NEXT election by January!

I think we are entering into a never-ending, non-stop campaigning era.

I guess we are talking about marriage here. Marriage beliefs and practices in America originated from the Bible. The Bible is not pro-gay so neither is America's marriage practices and beliefs. If gay, I guess you could change America but that is not working out so you have other options such as 1) Leave it or 2) Not be married or 3) Get on Collar chat and bitch about it.

I personally don't know what the fuss is about. I mean, which one wears the white dress? How do you "kiss the bride" when there is not one and when "she" lifts her dress for "him" to get the garter, will everyone suddenly find somewhere else to be? So, you see this marriage thing for gays is just not a good fit in America, soooo...

P.s. Yes, I am Politically Incorrect. At least until November...then maybe not so much, eh?

Nah, we're not. We're talking about how a political position Romney has taken is beginning to affect his campaign negatively.
Sorry you spent all that time working up what you must've thought was a pretty good debunk rap.
Maybe try absorbing the article before cutting and pasting.

Marini. It isn't just the republicans that have been campaining for the last 2 to 3 years. Your dear leader and chosen one Obama has been doing the same thing.
