I had the honour of meeting 4 of them here. It all starts about the same. A few dozen of promises, half a dozen pictures and then the demanding money starts.

Send me money!

If all you are attracting are people who want your cash, you probably need a different approach.

no, not at all

Don't the new scammers go after people actively? And don't the targets have to be essentially "anyone with an account"? I don't think it's a matter of attracting them as such, it's a matter of not immediately deleting their mail.

exactly. no one is immune.

you can now use google to search images:
https://encrypted.google.com/imghp

this will identify most of the scammers

beyond that, anyone who's too good to be true probably is. another clue - they didn't view your profile. yes, u can hide yourself viewing it, but why bother.

I think the site actually made that easier with the new user list.  Not hard to spot.  I keep warning folks about the stuff they receive on the fresh meat list.  [:D]

Actually, you're wrong about that.  You just don't necessarily know what they are looking for.

Just because most scammers are dumb enough to steal pics, doesn't mean everybody takes that method.

The problem is that a lot of guys just don't know what they put in their profiles that attract scammers or even the mistakes they make in what they put in email or forums posts that make them better targets than others.

Here's a partial of a list of stuff that you guys never think about:

quote:

I would specifically target males who have joined the site during certain times of the year.  Specifically those who had joined around major holidays that focus on having someone else in a person's life.  I'm thinking Christmas (or Boxing Day), New Years, and yes, even Valentine's Day.  Times of year that, statistically, it's proven that people are feeling lonely.  (If you doubt that, ask what times of year have the highest cases of reported depression.)  I'd be zoning in on that big time.  While it's not a perfect science (please look at My own date of joining the site) it would be where I would start.

Next, I'd be looking at a certain age group.  Probably 40-60.  Not young enough to not be established financially and not old enough not to have excess income.  These folks are ripe for the picking.  Oh, I'd especially look for those who mention in their profile that they have their own home or business.  My eyes would light up like dollar signs.

Unpopular kinks?  Paydirt!  That would definitely be My mark!  Those who have trouble finding their match due to being less than optimal.  Those unpopular kinks are an absolute goldmine!  Harder to find when it comes to someone who honestly enjoys certain things.

Oh, and I'd certainly look for desparation.  The kind that is almost so thick you can smell it in the air.  The ones that have no social links in their profile.  They don't speak of family or friends.  Those in isolated areas would be a bonus.  I'd look for words in profiles that would get My mind spinning.  No sweeter fruit could I have!

Now.  If you saw yourself here in what I've written, do not blame Me.  It's time that you took a look at yourself.  You who came along and made yourself the prey of those who see you for your wallet and not for who you are.  I am no brilliant mind, but I absolutely see it.  Perhaps it is time to see it in yourself and change that which makes you nothing more than a target.

Hmm, I really start to like them in a weird way. I was commercially trained so I know all the tricks they do. It's really funny when they email you a sort of solemn oath full of promises and the begging/demanding money starts. They sure go fast offline when I offer to travel to the USA to pick them up! Well, as long as they deal with me they don't deal with someone who might actually fall for these internet scammers. [:D][:D][:D]

tameeks -> RE: Money Scammers (5/23/2012 10:57:32 AM)

I am always surprised when I see the "warnings" that come on the news nightly about internet scammers. Some of the stuff can be so easily avoided by using common sense that I just end up staring at the t.v. with my mouth hanging open. I can't believe some of the stuff people fall for.

mnottertail -> RE: Money Scammers (5/23/2012 11:25:55 AM)

Yup, and you fell for it, little miss open yap....the news report was a scam!!!!!!

LOL.

Hahaha, then our newsrooms must be full of scammers, because I swear there's a new "what to watch out for" story about the internet almost daily.

It is so funny to see how their stories never add up. I had a scammer from London. Of course in desperate need of money. It told me she came from the USA to the UK to take care for her grandmother. I told her that I was more than willing to travel to London to pick her up if she would mail me her passport copy. She said she left it in the USA. Then I asked how she managed to travel to the UK without a passport. No reply: "Person X signed out"

And recently I had my third deaf one. This one was also mute. It was the one who sent me the fake passport copy.

Another scammer from the USA insisted that I sent her money to pay for her visum and send her money to buy planetickets. I had good news for the scammer. Americans don't need a visum for a number of European countries including mine. When it's about planetickes I am more than willing to order them myself on her name.

If you get explicit pictures ask them who took them. If they tell you "I live in Portland Oregon", start Google Earth, find interesting local places surrounding Portland Oregon and ask them about it. Usually it takes them a while to reply to such questions.[:D]

Ooh, was she an escaped sex slave from Ohio/Kentucky with lesbian sisters? Good news, they can communicate by phone with Morse code.

Taptaptap.

I'm picturing the success you'd have if you put the effort currently wasted on scammers into attracting local women...

Oh no, socialists take money from those who have it and give it those who don't have it. They legally rob you.

You should compare the taxes in more conservative countries like the USA with taxes in more socialist countries and then like Churchill you will immediately see that socialists are champions in robbing you.

I am always amazed at how easily men get scammed on this site.....and actually admit to it...Yikes!
