It isn't the pharmacist that decides what is available over the counter. They just work there.

Pharmacists have (on occasion) refused to fill prescriptions for birth control pills or sell prophylactics because of their religious convictions. I suspect that's what fargle's narked about.
(Not without justice: it's a bit like somebody taking a job at a pork butchers and then refusing to handle the meat because they're a muslim, really...)

Birth Control pills can have effects not involved in contraception, and are often prescribed for other ailments...So. No....not really

It's quite common to prescribe them for women who suffer from unusually heavy and unpleasant periods, isn't it?

I'd say there are well over a dozen things that BC pills are prescribed for that have nothing to do with birth control. Many of them are literally lifesaving.

I'm surprised it's an issue at all down there; it's not in Canada. I've never heard of anyone being unable to get the pill; even if you can't afford a dispenser fee, most doctors will have a 'trial' pack to give you, as does every sex health clinic.

You Canucks don't seem to have the same problems with Bible Beaters who think that birth control is EBILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL as we do down here in the states.

It's not so much that Birth Control is "evil", it's that playing the "Birth Control Is Evil" card, the priests, ministers and reverends can shear their flocks without too much bleating.

Remember, at the end of the day, it's ALL ABOUT GETTING MONEY OUT OF SUCKERS. And the con-men running the Catholic and Crazy Evangelical Churches have got the game down pat.

Again, I am tired of the religious interfering with other people's lives. Leave me be. A pharmacist should not have the right to refuse to fill a prescription properly obtained from a physician. Talk about imposing one's religious views on another human being.

I wonder if the post has anything to do with this?

There is someone I know who was put on birth control pills in October and nearly did not survive Halloween.

She is not a smoker.

Blood clots formed in her leg and she was unaware... they then traveled to her lungs and she was so close to death the doctors were surprised she survived.

Birth control pills are not like the little harmless sugar pills they appear to be.
A health care provider with access to a patient's medical history and risk factors along with accurate information about potential side effects and together they should be making informed choices about birth control options.

I believe in making birth control much more accessible to every one, but this is NOT the responsible way to do it.

Well, if the religious crazies stop using pharmacists to wage their War on Women, then we wouldn't need to react in this way to the threats they're causing.

Great points, Lucylastic. If you need an Assistant Counsel, I respectfully request an interview for the position.

http://www.wnd.com/2007/07/42520/

http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2009/03/04/male-female-fish.html

This one blames "anti-androgen" chemicals found in pesticides and "pharmaceuticals" without getting into specifics. It did state that estrogens in the waterways are not the only culprits.

Around the world, increasing numbers of male fish are developing female traits -- growing new sexual organs and sometimes even producing eggs. The phenomenon has been blamed mostly on chemicals that get into the water and mimic the female hormone estrogen.
But a new study puts some of the blame on an entirely different class of chemicals -- ones that block the action of male hormones called androgens.

http://www.environmentalhealthnews.org/ehs/newscience/sex-reversal-in-fish-linked-to-chemical-cocktail

Blames both estrogen and anti-androgens.

http://ruby.fgcu.edu/Courses/ndemers/Scitech/Fall%2011/Birth%20control%20in%20waterways%20Perez.pdf

But, to be fair and show that everyone is not ignoring the situation:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/22/boulder-creek-fish-facing_n_620850.html

http://inhabitat.com/wastewater-treatment-plant-upgrade-decreases-feminization-of-fish/

It went from 7 days for males to showing signs from a 50-50 mix of clean water and wastewater discharge to 28 days from 100% wastewater discharge after the upgrade.

So, no, female contraceptives are not necessarily harmless to the women taking them, nor to the environment. However, female contraceptives are not the only chemicals that are harming the environment, nor are they necessarily not worth the risks involved.

Contraception didn't used to be. It's the mad dogs that have taken over the republican party that have started this putsch.
