Unbelievable what some people will do to win.  I can't stand the Humane Society of the United States, they are no better than PETA.  But they are dead right on this, soring is against Federal law.

Soft-drink giant Pepsi announced Thursday that it would no longer sponsor a national horse show, thanks to startling footage aired by ABC News of a horse in training. The video showed the horse undergoing an abusive practice known as "soring." (Warning: Video may be upsetting to some viewers.)

Pepsi had sponsored the Walking Horse National Celebration since 2010, said the horse show, which is the nation's leading competition for Tennessee Walking Horses – a breed whose best-known attribute is its unique high-stepping gait. Pepsi spokesman Vincent Bozek confirmed, without elaborating, that the company has "ended our sponsorship of the event." Nor would horse-show officials explain the specific reason for the end of the relationship.

But according to Reuters, a Walking Horse showing insider, who chose to remain anonymous, thinks it's thanks to the ABC News footage of "soring," filmed by a Humane Society of the United States undercover operative and given to ABC News for broadcast. Keith Dane, the HSUS director of equine protection, said that an activist got a job in a horse barn and taped the abuse in March and April of last year, as part of an undercover investigation. The video (linked here; be aware that it contains disturbing footage) shows Walking Horses getting beaten with wooden sticks and zapped with cattle prods, and enduring the application of caustic chemicals like mustard oil and diesel fuel to their ankles, which were then wrapped in plastic and metal chains to increase the pain. The resulting soreness, which gives the practice of "soring" its name, induces the horse to lift its front legs in the show ring, creating the gait – a flinch, really, as "Nightline" correspondent Brian Ross noted -- for which the breed is famous. The electric shocks "help" the horses develop an insensitivity to pain; if show judges check for evidence of soring or other abusive practices used to create the gait, the logic goes, the horse won't react.

Yahoo! Sports: Factbox for this weekend's Preakness

Soring had become such a problem in the TWH community that the industry cracked down in 2009, creating an organization to investigate the practice and hiring vets to check up on horses and shows. The organization's president, Dr. Stephen Mullins, found the video disgusting: "I don't condone that at all." (Jackie McConnell, the trainer who, along with his employees, was caught on the tape, had no comment for ABC News, and showed no remorse. McConnell was the go-to trainer for rich owners who wanted their Tennessee Walking Horses to dominate the competition; he's now facing a federal indictment.) Mullins told "Nightline" that the practices aren't even necessary, but he also said he didn't believe they were "rampant." Unfortunately, a random check of a recent horse show belied that statement; swabs of 52 horses found foreign substances on the legs of all 52 animals. (It wasn't Vaseline, either. "Benzene" is just one chemical on the list shown by "Nightline.") And Jennie Johnson, another trainer interviewed on the program, thinks the problem is widespread.

The Humane Society frequently goes undercover to expose deplorable situations like this one; the HSUS and other animal-rights orgs have caught everything on video from chickens in overcrowded cages to sick cows dragged by tractors to nursing sows confined to crates. Some farm-state lawmakers have reacted poorly, passing laws to making "infiltrating" an agribusiness a crime. But some agriculture companies have made positive changes after seeing upsetting footage, agreeing to increase cage sizes or only buy from farms that let pigs walk free.
In the case of the horses, Dane said, they'd sent a camera into a show barn because the industry's attempts to police itself were ineffective. He hoped Pepsi's decision would get results. And it seems that the cola corporation got the fiscal attention of the Walking Horse National Celebration, at least. Chief executive Doyle Meadows issued a statement about gaining the trust of corporate partners, adding that "we would do nothing to destroy that relationship. As the Celebration moves forward to promote a sound horse we hope that everyone will assist in our efforts to promote this magnificent breed."

But it seems like it's the trust of, and relationship with, the equine partners that might need promoting.

The Walking Horse National Celebration is held in the late summer, in Shelbyville, Tennessee.

That is disgusting.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Torture of Tennessee Walking HorsesUh (5/18/2012 5:25:18 PM)

I just find it unbelievable that someone would torture an animal just to win.  It speaks to the patience and resilience of these horses that they don't kill anyone that comes close to them, after suffering such treatment.

Is it any surprise that this gait was first developed by plantation owners in the South to make a smoother ride for themselves as they surveyed their land.....need anything more be said...[&:]

I'd hate to tell you how long just such practices have been going on.

Winning trainers get to charge higher fees. And some people will do anything for that.

Some years ago there was a well known quarter horse trainer in our area. We went to a show and he brought over 10 horses from his barn. Usually only the winning horses are checked for illegal substances. This time, the show organizers said they were going to collect urine samples from every single horse entered. He immediately packed up and withdrew all those horses.

He's also the creep that had my daughter's horse for three months professional training several years before she bought him. We have never seen an animal that was so afraid of everything. The first time she took him into the home arena with other kids he freaked out. We traced that to the fact that a girl on the other side was carrying a crop. He had been severely beaten with one. He was afraid of the inside of the arena because that's where this trainer stayed, which meant if he was taken to the inside he expected to be beaten.

We went to shows with a medicine kit composed of cotton pads and betidine for cuts, and vitamin E for healing the cuts without scarring. Most every other trainer showed up with a case filled with substances illegal if they were caught using. We worried about the slippery slope if we gave a horse the equine version of aspirin when sore. Mainly we withdrew if they weren't in tip top shape.

There are very few trainers in the quarter horse world who I would trust a horse to. I can't imagine it's any different in the other breeds.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Torture of Tennessee Walking HorsesUh (5/18/2012 10:19:14 PM)

There is nothing natural about this show horse gait, though. I have ridden Tennessee Walkers, and they don't move like these show horses. The show trainers have perverted the breed by training for this exaggerated gait.
I know the practice has been around for a long time, but I didn't know they did it to Walkers, I thought it was just done to Saddlebreds. It was so widespread in that breed that a federal law was passed banning it.

I knew they were doing this years ago, it's reprehensible. Gaited horses are bred for smooth gait, not abused into it.

Horses are livestock, and who cares about livestock, right?[&o]

I'm on the Humane Society of the United States mailing list. I regularly sign their electronic letters of outrage to send to appropriate officials. I encourage everyone to do the same. It costs nothing but a few seconds of your time (unless you'd like to donate to HSUS, definitely a worthy cause.) Click here for the link to HSUS.

If I remember right, soring was outlawed 40 years ago. I wish a cluster of chronically infected pus-filled bleeding hemorrhoids to all who participate in this despicable practice.

That's not even a good beginning.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Torture of Tennessee Walking HorsesUh (5/19/2012 6:52:40 AM)

Unfortunately, while I do applaud the HSUS for this case, they far from a worthy cause. Their radical animal rights agenda attacks responsible animal owners as well as assholes like this horse trainer. a donation to local humane societies is a much better way to help animals.
It sounds like the Walking Horse show circuit needs to be shut down. Before 52 out of 52 entries to have used caustic substances on their horses' feet is despicable. It also feeds into the agenda of the radical animal rights people, and makes it harder for those of us who are responsible and caring owners.

The HSUS is a sleazy outfit using the good name of the local humane society's to do a lot of bad and stupid things.

As to the walking horse competitions, likely the judges have only rewarded the very exagerated gait that can only be produced by soring. The owners unwilling to abuse the animals know they won't be competitive with the breeds natural gait so they don't bother. This is a lot like the abusive practices of show dog breeders that have resulted in many pure bred breeds with profound problems because all that matters is matching an artificial standard.

Because 90% of these horses aren't making anyone any money. It costs more to train and show then they will ever make. So it is vanity, not profit, driving this

I do this as well. Every cat I've had in my 53 years has been a rescue. I'm well aware of what I can do to better the plight of animals on this planet.

Love them or hate them, HSUS has a global reach and influence that local organizations can't match. I rely on them to keep me informed about animal issues around the world, and can then research further and decide for myself how I can best help in these cases.

i don't even want to read the rest of the post or articles. it's upsetting to learn of yet one more way humans abuse animals, and for such a reason.

[sm=angry.gif] VENT WARNING!!! [sm=rantint.gif]

JESUS H. CHRIST DANCING ON A DILDO!!! WHAT PUTRID PUDDLE OF THE RANCID CUNT DRIPPINGS FROM SOME CHEAP STREET SLUT DID THAT WORTHLESS PILE OF SHIT CONGEAL OUT OF?

I've taken that too far. I did not mean to insult a pile of shit. A pile of shit after all still serves a useful purpose in that it will be eaten by flies that in turn will be eaten by other creatures and so contribute to the food chain and the great circle of life. When that fucktard dies I suspect that the flies will refrain from feasting on him... they will consider it beneath their dignity and go in search of a pile of dog crap instead.

Watching the expression on that asshole's (there I go, insulting useful things again) face as he rode made me realize that he gets off on lording it over, and abusing, "inferior" creatures. He's not high enough in the social hierarchy to exploit people so animals are all that's left to him. He is a worthless, pathetic nothing and he knows it so he compensates by abusing those who can't fight back. He is the grown up version of eight year old with a magnifying glass kneeling next to an ant hill. For a little while, he gets to play god and pretend that he is not a worthless, pathetic nothing.

As punishment I decree that he should be striped naked, bound hand and foot, and delivered up to the Collarme Ladies for a long lesson on what it feels like to be a victim. Said session to last seventy-two hours but the clock will not begin the countdown until they locate his penis (you ladies my need to borrow that magnifying glass).

The worst part about all of this is that it is for a reason that is beyond stupid... that ridiculous, unnatural, looking gait! Even with non-abusive training techniques... I fail to see the appeal.

There. I feel better now. [:)]
