Desmond Hatchett has fathered 30 children, all under the age of 14, with 11 different women. He's asking a Tennesse judge for some leinancy on child support payments that already take up half of his minimum wage paycheck.

A 33-year-old Knoxville, Tenn. man with 30 children appeared in court this week to ask the state for child-support help, Memphis news station WREG reported Wednesday.

Desmond Hatchett has fathered 30 children -- which is believed to be the record in Knox county, according to the Los Angeles Times -- with 11 different women. His youngest children are toddlers and his oldest is 14.

Hatchett reportedly asked the court to give him a break on his payments, claiming that he's struggling to make ends meet with his minimum-wage job. Currently, the state requires him to divide 50 percent of his earnings among the 11 women, some of whom receive as little as $1.49 a month, WREG reports.

How did Hatchett come to father so many children? “I had four kids in the same year. Twice," he told Volunteer TV in 2009. He also told a local news station that year that he was "done" having kids (he had only 21 at the time).

I have to wonder does he know what a condom is and do any of these 11 women know what a birth control pill is?

And yet, the "argument" is that giving him a vasectomy is a violation of his rights.  Those poor kids.  Most of those women had to know he had children.  Why did none of them think about birth control?  Most states don't increase welfare if you have children while on welfare, and honestly cash assistance really doesn't pay enough to "get rich" off the system.  Absolutely ridiculous.

LafayetteLady,in my area,it's a cottage industry pumping out babies to get government assistance. My mom used to work with the state's child support branch and dealt with several mothers 18 years old with 2 to 4 babies[I'm not kidding].If they can't draw extra welfare for having the baby, they'll get what the locals call a "crazy check",a monthly government check for having any number of mental issues. All you need is a Doctor willing to sign off on it and the money rolls in every month. If I remember correctly,it was 20/20 that did a piece on this several years ago[at least 10 years ago],even tried interviewing a guy I know very well that has/had at least 6 kids drawing a "crazy check".This guy has 17 kids I know of[although 2 have died] ranging in age from mid to upper 30's to one still in diapers. The reason 20/20 did the piece on this area was the percentage of people drawing this money was so much higher here than any where else in the country, but nothing has changed due to the airing of the problem.

This boggles my mind on so many levels, and also makes me a little sick. This guys disgusting. In regards to welfare, while there are abusers and they need to be curbed, it also does serve a purpose. I hear co-workers sometimes whining between each other about how they should quit their jobs and just live off welfare, and you can tell they never spent a day of their lives short on their needs. Being poor isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Definitely bad for the kids - for their sake I hope the welfare can actually offer them something...without reducing his own obligation of course.

He should give his story to schools and sex education classes

I agree.

While I am sickened at what our welfare has done to the truly of this country, I can see how stories such as this one have made the changes necessary.

Those poor kids.

It used to be easy to get disability for almost any issue.  That isn't the case anymore.  As of just a few years ago, the people who could get disability the easiest was people with substance abuse issues, but Social Security is cracking down on that now as well (and they should).  Regardless, the concept that people receiving "crazy checks" are living the high life is something stated by those who actually have never received it and have no idea how little these people receive.

Social Security Disability (your "crazy check") doesn't determine the amount by the disability, but by the person's work history.  Yes, there is a supplemental payment for children of the disabled, but it is a portion of the parent's amount.  In other words if a single mother who never worked a day in her life gets disability, she isn't going to get much, likely less than a thousand dollars a month.  Her children will receive a check that must be placed in a beneficiary trust account for a small percentage of the parent's amount.  In other words, the children's accounts can not be used for the parents' enjoyment.  Portions are allowed for rent, food, and necessities for the children.  This account can be audited at any time.

Not only that, but the amount they received in "crazy checks" will make them ineligible for other assistance such as food stamps, housing and cash assistance.

No offense, but your mother worked with the child support division, NOT social services.  They are two different agencies and they do NOT work together, aside from Child Support reporting to Social Services if someone applying owes or is paid/owed child support.  So while no disrespect to your mother is intended, she really wasn't in a position to know what is happening on the welfare end of things.

As someone else mentioned, there are examples of welfare fraud, but they aren't the majority of people collecting welfare, and honestly people who are receiving assistance and "living on the government dole" are typically living at or below the poverty level.

reminds me of the movie Idiocracy, where only stupid people have babies. cut to scene where a smart couple discusses why now is not the best time to have a child, then cut to scene of bubba's van shakin'.

Here is a prime example of EUGENICS

Some people need to be removed from the gene pool. But oh no, we are violating their civil rights, and their human rights. We as a civilized nation and people would never do such a thing. Then we have shit like this happen.

They have shown that serial killers and child rapists have chemical imbalances in their brains and deformities of certain brain regions, and then oh no we couldn't euthanize them based off brain chemistry. Then they go out and murder 30 people!

I don't think he is sick or anything, but could of planned better. Have as many kids as you want, as long as you can care from them on your own.

Like The Duggars family ( 19 kids and counting) they had a lot of kids but the can care from them.

As for the there being 11 different women, oh well, he must be a freaking charmer. Also at least he has a job and is trying to do the right thing.

My brother's "crazy check" is $832 per month. Ya, he's living it up on that.
