I won't profess to explain homosexuality - but - I feel it certainly applies to survival of the species in many ways simply because it exists.

And, it exists in over 1,500 species!

Please don't take this in offense as I don't judge you by your interests. I am curious as to how you think your sexual orientation evolved in humans as homosexuality precludes reproduction even more than BDSM.

While I do agree with the theory of evolution and many of the expansions that have been applied to Darwin's concepts in the development of what we now call "Darwinism", I find it a poor model for explaining absolutely everything.

The only people who call it "Darwinism" are typically people who don't understand it, namely creationists.

Homosexuality and BDSM work into evolution on a much grander scale. Because evolution doesn't work on individuals, it works on the population level. We are a species that is able to form societies and socially bond, and sex is a major way that we form social connections with other individuals. That's really what it has become for our species. And the social bonding allows for cooperation, and more importantly civilization. Since we as a species are able to bond with one another and form structured societies our survival rate is through the roof which in turn promotes further levels of socializing and civilizing.

We were talking about kink. I don't think that can be switched out for BDSM specifically because of the DS. DS is an extremely common social dynamic among group animals including us; this whole equality thing is the novel idea not the other way around.

True!

The assertion that the only possible purpose for human existence is ludicrous. Even without the religious component.

We were born with a mind capable of imagination and thus Kink was born. We like playing with strong emotions, it makes the world more real and it helps us understand ourselves.

8,000 years of sexually repressive religion from the Middle East, blame Jerusalem and Rome for all the European nonsense about "kink" - other Eastern cultures are far more liberated.

The "perversions" of human behaviour - anything apart from the missionary position - are related to the intense sexual energy of humans, permannently on heat after puberty.  Unlike most animals, we're "at it" all the time, or thinking about it when we're not at it.

Add the intensity of human animal passion to the twisted perversions of religious repression (look at the kinky clothes and dress fetishes you get with every Western religion "dressing for god", add torture, self-flagilation and more) and you have to have an outlet for your inner animal.

Welcome to the world of BDSM.

Don't worry, we'll eventually mature and grow out of religious nonsense and get back to natural, healthy, intense sex, sex, sex, sex, sex, sex.....

PS.  Blankpain, nice profile, you'd make a beautifl pet when you're ready to switch sides.  [sm=cool.gif]

Do other primates engage in perverse behavioral rituals such as D/s activities?

If we humans are alone in perversities, how/why would such mutual courtship behavior evolve to ensure species survival?

What was the threat that allowed us to evolve such complex perverse interactions?

I think it started with non acidic fruits.

My understanding is that kink is something people do instead of reproducing...

I remember explaining to my shocked grandmother it was OK my two pet rabbits were humping like it was going out of fashion...becuase they were both boys and couldnt have babies. I was 6. They were big butch rabbits who liked it rough and used to chase the cats....and also used to engage in watersports now I recall. They were called Starsky and Hutch (gettit?) and I think we all know there was a gay vibe to that show....

hehehehe

It's fun. I think saying it's part of evolution is kind of ridiculous. We have a frontal lobe.. humans do things for love, enjoyment and pleasure. Not just to procreate. With that said it's not like being kinky stops you from having children if you desire to have them.

Oh absolutely it doesn't, but your top won't get pregnant from you licking their shoes or them caning you, will they?

Interesting news on the front page of Google news today.
Penguins' explicit sex acts shocked polar explorer

It was so shocking to the Scott's polar exploring team, that they wrote it up in Greek, and stamped "not to be published" on the cover!

Excerpts follow.

Nov. 10, 1911, Levick wrote in Greek (translated here): "This afternoon I saw a most extraordinary site [sic]. A Penguin was actually engaged in sodomy upon the body of a dead white throated bird of its own species. The act occurred a full minute, the position taken up by the cock differing in no respect from that of ordinary copulation, and the whole act was gone through down to the final depression of the cloaca."

In another entry, this one written in English on Dec. 6 of that year, he wrote: "I saw another act of astonishing depravity today. A hen which had been in some way badly injured in the hindquarters was crawling painfully along on her belly. I was just wondering whether I ought to kill her or not, when a cock noticed her in passing, and went up to her. After a short inspection he deliberately raped her, she being quite unable to resist him."

"Necrophilia, for instance, is not the same in penguins and humans; Rather than being sexually aroused by a hot gal, male penguins are chemically wired to respond in certain ways to a seemingly compliant female of breeding age."

That's a very interesting question, and oddly enough, one that I've actually studied.

Kink actually came, in between invertebrate life forms, and Australopithecus.

(There was actually three weeks of very heavy partying and discussion that took place before there was a final consensus.....but that's pretty much the timeline).

kdsub -> RE: How did kink evolve in our species? Is it for reproduction only? (6/11/2012 6:28:40 PM)

I believe there is very little difference between humans and other beasts. Some dogs for instance would be just as kinky as some humans if they only had the imagination and intelligence to do so.

It is this imagination that allows all intelligent creatures to take their evolutionary drives and make them more pleasurable.

Fear and pleasure tempered by pain are the main driving forces of evolution….and kink.

All opinion of course.
