Discomfort can easily turn to pain, depending on the length of time you spend in a position. I would never leave anyone bound long term unless they understood how to use micro muscle stretching and flexing to keep themselves from being completely seized up afterwards. Even with stretching and micro movements, pain is there for a specific reason, to tell you 'this is not right!' and every body is different as far as what can be handled for duration and extention. Your muscles, tendons, and range of mobility are different from everyone elses, so it would require some hands on careful exploration to know how much discomfort you can take without doing harm. You can try any position you want, but increase time spent in that position in 5-10 minute incriments, and evaluate afterwards how the subject feels musclewse, and what the longer term impacts are. Is there swelling or too much stiffness/soreness the next day? - Never invert your subject for more than a few minutes, head should be higher than heart, or at least on the level with it. - Legs and lower body should not be higher than the heart for extended periods, while less dangerous than having heart over head, it can still increase risk of circulation problems, especially if you've got tight fitting bindings around the lower extremities. - Bindings should never be so tight they restrict bloodflow to extremities. If you notice discoloration differences between the areas above and below a binding, loosen it if it's going to be on for more than a few minutes. Ways to add discomfort? Use coarse binding ropes/items to add a bit of skin abraision whenever they squirm. Lay/sit them on something discomforting while bound. Read up on muscle cramping, and what it means to hyper extend muscles or tendons. Experimentation is fun with the body, just make sure you know how to deal with the after effects properly so that experimentation doesn't end up causing injury. Also reference some shibari material, these guys are pro's at trussing up their subjects, and usually for longer periods of time. Also keep safety in mind with quick release options incase the person in bondage does start to cramp up badly.
