I cant believe that any manager would have volunteered someone that inept to do the interview.

But lets be honest, what shes prob getting in housing benefit in london is more than some in the north get for working fulltime.

Sorry my sympathy is lacking, if you cant afford to live on your own, why the hell should the tax payer have to pay just because you forgot what a condom was.

Add to that, she had to sign a waiver for the interview to be used, and would have seen it in advance. So why sign and then bitch about it. OH guess why, to get sympathy and a cash payout.

i agree with Marc2b sentiments about the media. either through incompetence, laziness, or because they have an agenda or slant they are trying to promote, the media is more concerned with spin than truth.

re this reporter - it was obviously a surprise attack interview, along the lines of what the "60 Minutes" show used to do. i think they chose a cheap target, not worthy or deserving of that kind of attack. i.e., so what, she gets public assistance. i think the mum answered well, but not strongly enough, in saying the reporter has never been in the interviewee's mom's apartment, and doesn't know shit about that environment.

re the young mum - she has made poor choices, and is paying for them. don't have kids you can't afford to care for, and then expect my tax dollars to help subsidize your poor choices.

re banks getting huge bailouts, versus people complaining about welfare mums. i think the bank bailouts are unconscionable, and heads should be rolling. but that is totally irrelevant to the different subject of welfare parents. it's a red herring argument.

The most potent kind of propaganda doesn't deal in lies so much as in getting people to focus on one thing rather than another. In this subject, governments and the media have colluded to keep the focus as much as possible on welfare claimants. More broadly, those at the bottom rather than those at the top. So, what makes people the angriest about cheating in society nowadays - those bankers, or the fraudsters amongst welfare claimants? People will *say* 'Oh, both, of course!' - but in reality they'll spend more energy and time being furious about the fraudulent benefits claimants.

Me, I've now seen three decades' worth of scapegoating of welfare claimants and am seriously fed up with it. Governments and those in the media who do it I now see as nothing more than bullying, cowardly wankers.

I love the BBC and I am proud of it. I happily pay my license fee every year and believe it is money very well spent.

Generally yes I agree. But this doesn't excuse these types of interviews.

I get BBC news and news 24 which I believe generally presents the news in an unbiased way. I don't believe that the beeb is politically biased, they would never get away with it, whoever was in opposition would be all over them like a tramp on chips.

I admit they try, but no news is unbiased. That's why some politicians don't like the BBC.

So hands off my BBC OP. Your title implies that the BBC is constantly and deliberately misrepresenting the facts, that is a lie in my opinion. No it isn't perfect but I will take it hands down over any commercial station any day

I accept that my title can be taken that way but it wasn't my point or why I found the interview so objectionable.

This is for two reasons.

Firstly if you are receiving any sort of Government funding you have an obligation to act in the public interest. This applies to non-profit organizations, it applies to everyone on welfare benefits, and it applies also to the BBC.

I'm sure you'd agree that being in receipt of Job Seeker's Allowance carries with it the obligation to seek work and to work towards coming off JSA and working for your own income.

The woman in question works for the local authority Tower Hamlets. She is doing what she can. However when you can't even rent a small cupboard sized room in London for less than £100 a week what do you do? What is the solution here? Employers pay higher wages? Landlords charge less rent? That the lady in question try to find higher paid work? What if there aren't no jobs?

The media, including the BBC, is power. That interview IMHO was an abuse of power, no different from the police kicking someone's teeth in at the local police station..

We know that the media is biased, and we know that Murdoch and the right wing press go for the victim blaming strategy and stigmatizing the poor and people on benefits. If you follow the same logic as the reporter then people shouldn't be taking out mortgages and living off banks as scroungers. There is simply no excuse for the BBC to be playing the same game.

The reporter talked about making choices, right? Well okay let's focus on the choice of the media, politicians, and all those blathering on about 'taxpayers' money' and stigmatizing people on benefits and poor people.

There's a pretty uncomfortable truth and a hard reality - you either see it or you don't. This is that all those cheap consumer goods and supermarket deals everyone is able to take advantage of come with a price - and that price is that not everyone is going to be able to find well-paid work and some people will always have no other option but to live off welfare benefits.

It's really no different to life. Blaming people rarely if ever leads to a constructive solution and to me blaming the poor and people on welfare is a sorry excuse for not having any constructive solutions.
