Guide Dogs Of America

quote:

Guide Dogs of America was founded over 60 years ago by Joseph Jones, Sr. with the help of the INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF MACHINISTS AND AEROSPACE WORKERS (IAMAW or IAM)

Joseph Jones, Sr. was a retired member of the INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF MACHINISTS AND AEROSPACE WORKERS.

When Mr. Jones became blind, he considered all his options and decided his mobility needs would best be met by using a guide dog. He applied to all the existing schools, but he was declined because of his “advanced age”. He was only 57 years old.

Mr. Jones was a determined man and “no” was not a word in his vocabulary. He turned to the IAM for help, soliciting assistance from the INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF MACHINISTS AND AEROSPACE WORKERS’s Executive Council. The INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF MACHINISTS AND AEROSPACE WORKERS Executive council conducted extensive research, determined there was a growing need for guide dog services, and therefore endorsed the founding of International Guiding Eyes (IGE) In 1948. The INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF MACHINISTS AND AEROSPACE WORKERS continues to be a generous supporter and staunch advocate of the school’s mission today.

IGE was one of the first guide dog schools to be founded by a blind individual. It was also one of the first schools to adopt a policy of no upper age discrimination.

In 1992, International Guiding Eyes changed their “doing-business-as” name to Guide Dogs of America in an effort to communicate more clearly the services provided by the organization. Now the organization operates under the name Guide Dogs of America as an International Guiding Eyes Program. Today Guide Dogs of America seeks new and better ways of helping the blind community.

Let's Run.com

quote:

Maybe this is too hopeful but Wisconsin, Ohio and Indiana all give me hope. LET’S SHUT DOWN THE UNIONS INCLUDING THEIR UNION WORK RULES, HIGH LOCKED IN FEES/SALARIES, TENURE, SENIORITY, PENSIONS, AND THEIR “IN THEIR POCKET” POLITICIANS. IT’S WHY AMERICA IS NO LONGER INTERNATIONALLY COMPETITIVE. They killed the auto industry among others (remember US Steel) Lets close them ALL down. It won't be easy but we can do it.

ALL UNIONS HAVE A NEGATIVE INFLUENCE AND WE NEED TO GET RID OF THEM. If companies did what unions do it would be called price fixing and they would be arrested. UNIONS JUST PROTECT THE INCOMPETENTS. UNIONS VOTE AGAINST REPUBLICANS AND HAVE WEAKENED THIS COUNTRY.

UNIONS HAVE RESULTED IN UNEMPLOYMENT AND WAGES THAT WEAKEN THIS COUNTRY. [After we get rid of all unions,] then let's get rid of Medicaid, cut food stamps by 90%, unemployment insurance, and breakfast programs given by schools. There is so much waste and give-aways. It’s really crazy.

Get Rid Of The Unions And Free The American Worker!

The ‘union’ goons are the community organizers…like the Muslim Brotherhood was the community organizer in the middle east…and all…all…working hand in hand with the Chameleon N’ Chief…aka the Liar N’ Chief…aka the PUPPET of the Bilderberg…Obama the Bush in the hopes of taking America and the world down to allow the Bilderberg…to move in and form the New World Order!

Damn them fucking unions and their 40 hour work week!

quote:

By 1970 the 40-hour workweek was the norm. And, at least until recently, European and Asian countries have followed the same trajectory of declining work hours. Since 1991 average annual work hours have dropped by 11% in Japan, 10% in France, 6% in Germany and Britain, and 5% in South Korea. Meanwhile, average monthly work hours in Taiwan are down by 7% over the same stretch. Even work hours in China, while still much higher than in the U.S., may be coming down. "Asians are poorer and still working like crazy," says Alberto Alesina, a Harvard University economics professor who has studied international work hours. "But as they get richer, they are taking more leisure."

The one real exception to the rule has been the U.S. Since 1991 the U.S. has grown substantially faster than Europe and Japan. Nevertheless, average annual work hours are down by less than 2%, and that includes all the low-skilled workers who are in less demand today.

quote:

In the Netherlands, they've got the work-hard-play-hard balance down to a T. "We don't have long lunches," says Ton Wilthagen, professor of social law and policy at Tilburg University, noting that the Dutch are neck and neck with their famously productive American counterparts. "We get two rolls with cheese and a glass of milk and that's it." In return for their dairy-fueled focus, the Dutch work shorter hours each day, get six-week paid vacation and are even given an 8% holiday bonus, called a vakantiebijslag, by their employers in the spring.

In the U.S., however, it's a different story. The average American worker earns 14 days off per year, but only takes 12 of them, according to a 2011 survey by Expedia. About a quarter of Americans don't have any vacation time at all. "The U.S. is the only [industrialized] country in the world that does not have statutory requirements on employers to provide paid holiday, paid parental leave or paid sick days," says Schmitt. "We are enormous outliers."

See, we could have shorter hours, and more vacation time if it wasn't for unions!

Moonhead -> RE: "Unions are destroying the U. S. A.!!!" (5/31/2012 12:44:46 PM)

So who has a better economy, then, you guys, or those evil unionist lefties up in Norway?

Those countries also have more government regulation and higher taxes.

In many countries, you'd enjoy 6-8 weeks of vacation. And 2 hour lunches.

Nice to hear, though, that you're now in favor of more government regulation!

In the absence of that, we had to do it through unions.

Unions have never done no wrong!

No union is famous for being deeply associated (dare we say controlled) by the Mob.

No union, or union members have ever been indicted for a criminal conspiracy.

No union member has ever been known to intimidate a non-union member (hell, even other union-members), much less kill them.

No union forces you to join, and requires by law that you pay its membership fees, that the union leadership can use politically in pretty much any manner they want.

No union has ever made excessive demands that caused the bankruptcy of a company, or an industry, thereby sending jobs elsewhere.

No union forces you to join them, in order to even have a job.

Yup. Unions. Pretty much heaven-made. [8|]

Corporations have never done no wrong

No cortporation is famous for being deeply associated (dare we say controlled) by the Mob.

No corporation, or senior manager have ever been indicted for a criminal conspiracy.

No corporate lackey has ever been known to intimidate a non-union member (hell, even union-members), much less kill them.

No corporation has ever made terrible business decisions that caused the bankruptcy of a company, or an industry which were then blamed on unions, thereby sending jobs elsewhere.

Now if somebody had tried to tar Republicans and/or conservatives with a brush that broad you'd be stamping your little foot like Violet Elizabeth Bott and scweaming about "confirmation bias", wouldn't you?

mnottertail -> RE: "Unions are destroying the U. S. A.!!!" (5/31/2012 1:25:23 PM)

if you substitute corporation for union in that cant you could run up the same conclusion.

And it wouldn't have anything more to do with it.

Fightdirecto -> RE: "Unions are destroying the U. S. A.!!!" (5/31/2012 1:33:03 PM)

The unions I belong to, IMO, haven't been "Heaven made", but working life has been much better and safer in my areas of employment with unions than without them.

I joined my first union, Actor's Equity, in 1959 at age 8 and my second and third unions, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) and the Musician's Union, two years later at age 10. I joined the Stuntman's Association (now part of the Screen Actor's Guild or SAG) in 1968 at age 17. I maintained my dues-paying status in all of my unions during my active duty Army service and went back to work in the entertainment business after my discharge.

When I was injured on the job, I got medical treatment because of SAG. (Stuntmen had to pay their own medical bills from on-the-job injuries out of their own pockets prior to the creation of the Stuntmans Association in 1961. If they died on the job doing a stunt, the film/TV production company wasn't even responsible for their funeral expenses. For example, actress Yvonne De Carlo had to go back to work in the TV series The Munsters when her stuntman husband, Robert Morgan, was run over by a train while doing stunt work on How the West Was Won, resulting in the amputation of his left leg and MGM Studios wouldn't pay, and wasn't obligated to pay, anything toward his medical bills.)

When a director proposed a stunt which I considered too dangerous, SAG protected me from retaliation by the film/TV production company when I turned down the stunt. (Prior to the creation of the Stuntmans Association in 1961, a stuntman who turned down a stunt would be "blacklisted" for life and never work again).

AFTRA and SAG have ensured that I got paid for my work when the TV shows were re-run on TV or when the movies or TV shows were sold as DVDs.

As a musican, the Musician's Union has ensured that I get paid for re-issues of record albums which I have worked on when they have been converted into CD's.

When I get too old to take care of myself, I'll probably go into the Actor's Home in Englewood, New Jersey, operated jointly by two of my unions, Actor's Equity and the Screen Actor's Guild.

I'll be a proud "Union Man" until the day I die. [;)]

AFSCME, Wisconsins largest state employee union has lost 34,000 members since March of 2011. Membership has fallen from 62,818 members to 28,745. The reason. Employees are no longer required to join AFSCME in order to keep their jobs. What a concept.

Musicmystery -> RE: "Unions are destroying the U. S. A.!!!" (5/31/2012 3:10:34 PM)

If only they could get socialists.
