Sensory Deprivation - 6/6/2006 5:56:14 PM

Hello everyone.   I'm new at this, and would like some feedback on something I once thought
I liked.   In a profile on another site, I listed that I enjoyed sensory deprivation.   I received a message from someone, whom I have never met, or even chatted with, telling me that I probably didn't.

Now, first of all, since I've never met this person, he really has no clue as to what my likes and dislikes are, but it did make me wonder.  He gave me his definition of it, and it was not at all what my thoughts are.

So.... anyone mind telling me what it really is?

Thanks   :)

This is from Wikipedia:

Sensory deprivation is the deliberate reduction or removal of stimuli from one or more of the senses. Simple devices such as blindfolds and earmuffs can cut off sight and hearing, while more complex devices can also cut off the sense of smell, touch, taste, thermoception (heat-sense), and 'gravity'. Sensory deprivation has been used in various alternative medicines and in psychological experiments (e.g., see Isolation tank), and for torture or punishment. Though short periods of sensory deprivation can be relaxing, extended deprivation can result in extreme anxiety, hallucinations, bizarre thoughts, depression, and antisocial behavior.[1]

I have always considered sensory deprivation the removal of one of more senses as a means to increase the use of other senses.  ie blindfolds to increase the use of sound, smell and touch.

Comfort level and circumstances of it's use play an important part in how a person will react.  I was once placed in a float tank and had no adverse reactions...i found it to be a rather pleasant experience.  I have also been blindfolded on a specific occasion and found myself experiencing extreme anxiety.

Sensory Deprivation is generally pretty much what it sounds like- limiting your sensory input.

There is however "sensation play" which includes sensory deprivation within it as well as a whole host of other things.

Just goes to show that you should never assume that you're dealing with the same dictionaries.

What's really interesting about this topic of sensory deprivation is that I actually have to be careful of this with my critical care patients.... patients in the ICU can very easily slip into a (unwanted) delirium due to this type of thing... but the causes are different than what we kinksters use... my patient has no concept of day or night, the ICU is a busy place 24 hours a day, the lights are always on, machines are always beeping, doctors and nurses constantly walking in and out of the room.  Visitors are restricted due to the severity of illness one must have in order to be an ICU patient... patients are in private rooms with glass doors, think david blaine's stupid fishbowl in Times' Square.... They eventually start to go crazy.  It's pretty serious.

Then there are those of us who can slip into a beautiful headspace/subspace from sensory deprivation.  Hmmmmm....

And I totally love how someone emailed you back saying you didn't like it.  LMMFAO.... tell them to FUCK OFF.  I'm a big believer in the telling of stupid people to fuck off.

there is nothing quite like being blindfolded, ear-muffed (is that a word?), bound tightly and left wondering what the Domme will do next.....*shivers*

I'm afraid I'm going to have to wholeheartedly agree with BrattyBottom..... her advice thus far sounds the best, in My opinion.

Now I'm curious as to what the OP's "expert" told her sensory dep "really" is.

Personally, I love nothing more than to be blindfolded, gagged, ear-plugged, bound and set inside the isolation box for an hour or three.
