I was in the USAF, which has far less rigorous physical requirements than other branches of the service and doesn't bother insulting your mother, etc. The worst parts weren't really bad and included boredom, bad food, and shin splints. I'd made sure I had everyone's address, wrote to them all, and got lots of letters in return.
I'd put in for all overseas bases, was first assigned to one in Nevada, and swapped for Okinawa, which was great.
When I enlisted back in the 80s, the last thing on my mind was health insurance, but I am sure grateful for it now, as well as the two 2 year degrees the GI Bill financed and the good work habits that continue to this day.
If I were Empress, all young adults would do some sort of mandatory service, whether it be the military, Peace Corp, whatever.
