Mitt Romney Wins Over The Right By Confronting Obama

quote:

...

The unapologetically aggressive tone of Romney's campaign is manifest at every turn — from his aides' fierce Twitter wars, to the candidate's surprise press conference at failed green solar company Solyndra, and the campaign's continued refusal to apologize for Donald Trump's outlandish conspiracy theories about Obama's birth certificate. It's all part of a deliberate — and, so far, successful — strategy aimed less at convincing undecided voters, and more at rallying the Republican Party around its candidate.

“There were a lot of folks who didn’t think he’d have the edge to really take on the president,” a Romney advisor, who outlined the campaign strategy on the condition of anonymity, told BuzzFeed, refrring to “the Santorum people and conservatives who have been off the bandwagon.”

“They’ve been pretty surprised and impressed at how willing Boston has been to push back,” the advisor said. “We’re raising money, and I’m getting calls from people saying, ‘This is amazing… I didn’t think this would happen.”

“Now there’s a narrative that this guy is going to fight back and that’s not going to be a McCain situation where they get to attack you and everything you say is off limits,” he said.

The conventional wisdom of the chattering class has been that Romney is captive to the Republican Party's conservative base, desperate and anxious to maintain their tepid support. But his new appeal to the right marks a recognition that he can court conservatives without, in any traditional sense, "tacking right." His aggressive tactics stand in for the sort of policy compromises that could damage him in November; better, his advisers argue, to court conservatives with a press conference shouting match than with a high-profile fight over abortion or gay marriage. What’s more, they say, the media obsession with Romney “pandering” to the right represents a misunderstanding of conservatives, who can live with Romney’s moderate record – as long as he’s a fighting moderate.

I think I can live with that.

Ditto... I wondered if Mittens had it in him as well, but after seeing how he went on the "attack" during the Primary, I was encouraged -- and recent events have been encouraging as well. =)

I've been pleased with his team's ability to successfully counter every Obama attack over the past months. The "eating a dog" to his "dog on a car" was a classic. The protesters in Boston, to scuttle the Obama sneak-attack, combined with the Solyandra press conference at the same time was brilliant theater and campaigning.

Well, Firm, let's hope they keep it up. It turns out the unemployment rate is going UP, instead of down, so we are sure to hear some new horror story from Mitt's past here shortly. [8|]

I hope we do. Then we can hear more about horror stories about Obama's present.

A moderate who'll fight is much preferable to a "conservative" who gives in at every turn.

A chunk of the Republican base just doesn't like Romney, for whatever reasons. I still find him a little bit creepy, like someone being monitored in headquarters, in a 'Men in Black' movie. I can live with it. I've learned enough about him to think his heart is in the right place, even if his mouth sometimes can't get there.

If Romney is able to take a stand-up posture that can appeal to the middle, and let those folks get over it on their own (what we they gonna do - vote Obama?), it's that much harder to paint him as too extreme.

Owner59 -> RE: A fighting Moderate ... (6/2/2012 11:15:05 AM)

The never ending torrent of negative ads aren`t going to appeal to the middle.

Even when Mitt disavows the pro-Mitt super pacs.....folks will think it`s Mitt saying those awful,bigoted,ugly and embarrassing things and will associate it w/ Mittens.There`s a saturation point at which time....this dirt and slimming works against the attacker.

There`s going to be billions and billions billions spent on negative ads against the president....nothing like we`ve seen before......it`s going to be mind numbing......

One tho, has to have more to offer than repeating that President Obama caused the '08' crash or wasn`t born in the USA.

One must have something positive to offer folks,it can`t seem like insincere flip-flopitiness either.

Mitt still doesn`t have a position on Afghanistan and his attack Iran comments are only good for getting the extreme end of the gop to vote for him.....not votes from the middle.

The "severe conservative`s" greatest liability and challenge(besides Trump[:D]) will be his mouth.

Cons don`t know it yet or have been on one hell of a cool-aid binge but Mitt really can`t speak and doesn`t interview well,can`t stump speech and can`t debate.

No, Owner59, they aren't. Since President Obama sure as shit can't run on his record though, it's all he has. [8|]

40 straight months of unemployment over 8%, and now it's going the wrong way. That certainly won't appeal to the middle, either.

He created more jobs in his 1st year than in all 8 years of your epic failure bush`s admin.....

Most folks also blame you cons for continuing to drag our economy down worse than it would have otherwise been.

No one`s buying the rot that the economy`s destroyers would have fixed it faster.......but please do continue w/ that......[:D]

All the no votes,obstruction and salving of wallstreet`s testicles have been successful....congratulations.

So if the president isn`t campaigning on the economy(he is folks[:D])......why are you guys suggesting throwing acid in women`s faces?

and who is more guilty for causing that since it takes several years for this crap to work through the system.

Of course one does not have to grease the wheels to balm the sitting el' prazzie dante' for what everyone contributed to.

jlf1961 -> RE: A fighting Moderate ... (6/2/2012 5:50:58 PM)

I think it is real funny that if you check the facts against what Mitt has said in ads and at press conferences, you find out he is lying through his teeth.

First, when the Department of Energy IG looked into the Solyndra funding, Mitt says that the Obama administration sent money to Family and Friends, according to the IG.

The fact is that the IG found NO wrong doing by the Obama Administration.

Oh, I may point out that Solyndra got its initial federal money from the BUSH administration.

That is just one example of his lies, but hey, facts have never stopped republicans from saying something that is so untrue and easily checked.

By the way, Mitt as governor funneled millions of dollars into various companies in Massachusetts that went belly up. Notice he is not admitting that little fact.

When in doubt Republicans and Conservatives, Lie through your teeth. Eventually someone might believe you guys.

It's a bit more civilized than the union way?

jlf1961 -> RE: A fighting Moderate ... (6/2/2012 7:20:01 PM)

It is alright for Republicans to call for violence against people. Remember the Nevada senatorial candidate that made the statement about "2nd Amendment remedies" to democrats being elected?

It is also, as I said before, acceptable tactics to blatantly lie in the face of facts that are easily checked AND ignore similar activities by Republican Presidential candidates AND ignore the fact that it was a REPUBLICAN president that started giving federal money to a company that failed terribly.

I have been trying to stop laughing so I could point out how the article is using this scummy bit of linking Mitt to Boston... like there's some kind of flood of support back home or imply he's an actual Bostonian, when the truth is Mumble Menino could kick Mitt's ass if he came back to re-run for Governor.
He should be ashamed trying to score with a 'knickname' that would EVER be used by anyone outside his local campaign staff ... who are under ORDERS to do so.
I was on the commuter rail the Thursday with a guy who was a very vocal supporter of Ron Paul and asked him who the Massachusetts Paul supporters were going to back after the convention and he said "Now? Obama. We've already had our fill of Romney. It'll be down to who's less painful".

She may not support collective bargaining and organized labor, but she apparently believes in some forms of 'extra-governmental collective bargaining'

And at least candy came out. That's more than Nikki Haley wants workers to make.

DarkSteven -> RE: A fighting Moderate ... (6/3/2012 6:53:50 AM)

Makes no sense to me at all. The folks that Romney's appealing to by tacking right, are the same folks who would vote for any Republican over Obama. Only two explanations I can think of:

1. He needs the right for their funding and organization, not just their votes, or
2. He got Santorum's and Gingrich's old advisers when their candidate left the race.

Moonhead -> RE: A fighting Moderate ... (6/3/2012 9:01:36 AM)

It could be either or both, Steven, but I favour:

3. Romney's campaign is being managed by people who don't want their party back in power while they might conceivably take the blame for the shitawful clusterfuck the chimp made out of the economy.
