I tried to think back ... hasn't this ever happened? I thought at least a Diane Sawyer or something ... but perhaps those were party debates.

Anyway, it's certainly worth while and might add additional perspective to the debates.
I'm all for it... spread it around if it's something you support.

Maybe it's time for a conservative woman as a moderator.

Sarah Palin and Ann Coulter are both highly moderate sorts. I'm sure they'd be ideal, and desperate enough for the attention to do it...

Sure, I'm all for it as long as its one of the sane ones. Have you guys decided Christine Whitman is a RINO yet?

Anyone can sponsor and moderate a debate as long as they can just get the candidates to show up. Most interest groups don't have enough resources to make it worth their time though.

The League of Women Voters sponsored the Presidential Debates in 1976, 1980, and 1984. I'm not sure if they ever had a female moderator, but they had some influence over the topics covered in the debate. When they backed out in 1988, the Commission on Presidential Debates took over. Don't be fooled by the name. The CPD is a privately funded non-profit and does not have to subject itself to the whims of petitions or activism.

I wanted to know more about the CPD's funding and found this interesting article which includes greater areas of concern than the gender of the moderator: www.opendebates.org/documents/REPORT2.pdf

Never-the-less, I have signed the petition.

^ THIS

the debates are a sham in that it perpetuates a two party system.

i didn't sign because i want a small person (formerly known as midgets) to moderate. or perhaps a disabled person.

Both of them as co-moderators. Should be a hoot. [8D]

I had thought Gewn Ilfill, but she only moderated VP debates.

Wait a sec....I'm missing something here....they have (or had) a debate every election, put on by "The League of Women Voters".

If I recall, they're moderated by (hold on.....it's coming to me....wait....it's on the tip of my tongue.....)......women.

And then, in the last 3 (of the "mainstream" debates) that I remember watching...women were involved as moderators in each of all 3 of same, with male moderators asking questions equally as often.

(Did I miss something?)

Indeed, each one of the women shown in this link: http://www.change.org/petitions/it-s-time-for-a-woman-moderator-equality-in-the-2012-presidential-debates ....

.... Were moderators at some level in in every single one of the last 3 Presidential debates.

(I clearly need to pay more attention).
