Today I took a picture of the little reflection that got me humming Buddy Holly music. Then I thought about the lyrics and realized (again) how they carried the misogynistic mood of the era: "You say you're gonna leave, you know it's a lie cuz, that'll be the day-hey-hey, that I die." That's manipulative at its kindest, since we all know planes, not women, killed Buddy. It made me do that double-take once more and think more about the music I choose to listen to. (I know of an alternative translation where the woman is the manipulator, but it doesn't feel that way, if that makes any sense. I believe it's because of the overreactive response he posits.) Have you ever had your own double-take on the meaning of a song's lyrics, in a good or bad way? What were they? How did it affect you?
