We went to see PROMETHEUS last night. I had mixed feelings about it while leaving the theater, but on the day after I was residually impressed. A. Story: The story was a very good one (aka, the main plot.) It crossed the ideas of warfare and creation: (1) in order to create or save lie --- you might you might want access to destructive powers (biological warfare.) (2) How do you reconcile destructive power (annihilation, death, ugly hostility) with creation and / or God? (3) Is profiteering by huge corporations the greatest, anti-human evil of modern and future times? B+ B. Acting: The acting by the robot and the lead female character (original Dragoon Tatoo actor) were excellent, but the inputs from the supporting cast were unmemorable. C C. Script: The characters and the dialogue failed to advance the plot, often subverting it. Characters and relationships were not well developed except for the two leads. I found the behavior of everyone questionable and dumbfounding. Highly trained / paid professionals acted like bored, petulant teenagers who had to go to biology and gym classes under the supervision of bad administrators. D D. Set: The ship, the planet, and the gear were all incredible. One was transported to another world with the eerie sensation that the Aliens loomed nearby. It had the "what happened" sensation of ALIENS and the "don't go in there" feelings of ALIEN -- a powerful 1-2 combination dread. A E. Ending. A fascinating movie sequel was perfectly set up for the making. B+

Quick Reply Drove me mental in places, particularly as all the technology demonstrated in use was WAY in advance of what was available in Alien yet it was billed as a prequel and therefore needed to predate it within it's universe IMO. Certainly it set itself up for a sequel another thing that irritated me, as I don't actually see the need for a Prometheus 2 if it is "the Alien prequel" Still beautifully shot and very clearly a Ridley Scott film which I loved. Some great and some terrible performances but that's often modern cinema.

the boy and i saw it in 3d at the pics and were both of the same opinion; as a ridley scott alien prequal film it's just......not! i enjoyed some of the shots and imagery, but generally found it slow. i expected more from the discovery/archaeology side of things, and there was still no explanation as to how the funder got the info he had to make him want to fund the trip in the first place. this film had the potential to be sssooooooo much better than it is. i liked the 'aliens' but seriously....where were the Aliens? so ok it leaves everything on a cliffanger for a second film, but i'm guessing that if they'd done a better job it could have all been done in the one film. as it should have been as a prequal. it is a rather slow film with hints of greatness.......most of which was shown in the bloody adverts! (i really don't get what the obsession is with showing tons of a film in the ads, it takes so much away from the film.) so i suggest that if you still haven't seen it, don't see it as an Alien prequal. go and see it as a stand alone film, and that way you may not be so disappointed. needles

FR Ridley Scott is an interesting filmmaker so for that reason alone I'm interested in seeing it. But I'll probably leave the prequel thing at the door and try and watch it and experience it on it's own.

From the Salon Review: (1) But do its so-called heroes really have to be such blithering New Age idiots? (2) Key plot points, as per usual, depend on the characters’ dunderheaded decisions and general lack of common sense. (3)I’m generally in tune with the mordant philosophy that seems to be expressed in “Prometheus”: If you think the human race are assholes, wait till you see who made us! (1) I likened the characters to high schoolers, he likens them to new-age idiots. (2) I'm in full agreement here. (3) Yes, be careful what you wish for.

The film leaves you with a lot to think about, but without a strong emotional connection to its characters or what happened to them (save for the two survivors.) Here is the BEST REVIEW I have read: http://www.prometheus-movie.com/community/forums/topic/7686

I ha the joy of seeing it in a theater all to myself (no one else came to the showing) so we got to MST3K the bad parts; which greatly improved the film. Especially as the characters inevitably made bad choice after bad choice (clearly none of them watched any of the alien movies) I spent most of the time wanting to smack the male anthropologist and am baffled how 'whatshername' could be remotely interested in him. Over all, with its short coming it was fun and technically cool. What it really needed at the end was for the new born alien to go "mamma."
