Hopefully by now you've figured out from the replies you've received that this is a really, really stupid idea---and this is coming from someone who has been caned until I bled. (and liked it)
As MIP said: right tool for the right job. Canes are an acquired taste--they do take some knowledge and skill. Easy to learn, hard to perfect. A curtain rod made of plastic will likely splinter and break so assuming your girlfriend isn't a complete moron (big assumption perhaps), don't use any implement that is about to break, broken or likely to break. You'll just end up spending the evening tweezing fragments of plastic out of your bum and it won't be pleasant for anyone involved.
If the fantasy is important to both of you, I suggest she take you to a Professional Domme who is skilled in caning. It doesn't take much all to draw blood--after the first set of stripes, when the second set criss-crosses over, any place where the two striped weals intersect is likely to raise a drop of blood or two.
In your case, I'd leave to fantasy if you've never been caned before and work yourself up to a severe one. It would be a pity to waste a professional Domme's time if you freak out after the first stripe. (which I'm told, happens on more than one occasion)
