Lots of these threads around today it seems.
Use online to establish basic compatibility; i.e., are they local enough, experienced enough, have a relationship status that works for you, and otherwise seem like, on the surface, that they would fit your needs. Pay attention to how courteous they are to you, how respectful, are they asking questions as well, etc. Know that all the info they are giving will need to be verified later. You should be able to do this within a couple days of first contact.
If everything seems to be ok on the surface, speak to them on the phone. Frankly, I keep a separate pay as you go cell phone for this. It costs me about $100/year and I only ever bother to turn it on when I want to talk with someone new.
I can usually suss out within about 20 minutes on the phone if I'm interested in meeting someone face to face. If I am, we meet within about 10 days for something simple like coffee.
I take my time getting to know someone, but that happens face to face, not online.
It's amazing how quickly the above method weeds out the idiots.
