So, this may be the dumbest post ever made, but wtf.

I hate scented stuff. Soaps, shampoos, antiperspirants, all that jazz.

For the past 25 years or so, I have used plain old unscented Mitchum roll on. So strong you can skip a day or some such is how I think they marketed it years ago. It works well.

Well, commencing into menopause and my skin drying up and changing so much, it has begun to irritate the hell outa me some days. I have looked on store shelves for another brand of unscented roll-on and can not find one. I have talked to my friends, who, I am sad to say, all love stuff that smells like flowers or rain or powder or some such.

So, anyone know of a gentle unscented roll-on? This sensitive pitted old broad would appreciate any suggestions.

Well, I was about to order some of the crystal roll on, then I realized it was just a deodorant. I may check out the Clinique at the mall. I am such a cheapskate, I hate to spend 10 bucks on it, but I may have to.

Thanks Angelica, I may have to spend some time googling. I have been looking on shelves at stores.

Avoid anything with aluminum in it. It causes cancer. Use deoderants. Sweat is natural, and you should sweat.

Dove unscented - cheap and works pretty well (not Mitchum well, but still...) ... and it's gentle to (my) skin. I bought ten tubes of it last time I was in the states.

Some of those do say they keep you dry; mineral salts tend to have that property.

Do you think you really need it or as much as you use it? I use antipersperant only occassionally,.. whenever I feel I need it.. I think I have even gone months without using it, sometimes I might use it once a week or two... I shower every day and if i work out twice a day then i shower twice a day so i am clean and dont seem to need it.. Even tho i am a girl i do sweat a lot when i work out (no sissy work out for me

) but still dont use antipersperants very often.. Sometimes we tend to do things cuz the ads tell use we "need" to.. they play on our insecurities.. jmo..

if there's any near you, try the 99 cent store. mine always has plenty of unscented antiperspirant. it's actually a great place for some sundries.

I have chemical sensitivities and cannot abide artificial fragrance. There's a good reason for that too: http://safecosmetics.org/article.php?id=222

I didn't find deodorant/antiperspirant from Whole Foods to be effective. Lately I've been using Almay unscented. This was widely available in FL but not in MA, so I've been buying it on Amazon, where it is under $4 including shipping.

You need to read the labels on "unscented" products.

Unscented Deodorants May Still Have Fragrance; Unilever, Proctor & Gamble, The Dial Corporation, Revlon Cons Prod Corp called out

Many products are listed as “Unscented” but if you take a closer look they may still be scented with a “masking fragrance”. This makes absolutely no sense to me….. why list it as unscented when they have put a scent in it? Are the companies too lazy to name the scent? Did the marketing departments run out of silly naming ideas like cool breeze, fresh rain, and powdery shower?

The “unscented (but not really)” label is very noticeable in the deodorant aisle…. read the ingredients on the back of all the anti-perspirants listed as “unscented”. You may be surprised to see how many brands do this.

Secret "Unscented"

Why am I complaining about this? Because I am sensitive to fragrances and I have purchased products expecting them to be fragrance free and they were not. I am wiser now and always check the ingredients on the back.

Proctor & Gamble‘s Invisible Solid PH Balanced Secret isn’t the only brand that does this, there are many more. Here’s a list of a few I’ve found labelled as unscented but contains a fragrance….

- Unilever‘s Dove Sensitive Skin Invisible Solid Unscented (They changed the product since I wrote this in March- See Update at bottom of post)
- The Dial Corporation‘s Dry Idea Clinical Complete Invisible Solid Unscented
- The Dial Corporation‘s Dry Idea Clear Gel Unscented
- The Dial Corporation‘s Dry Idea Clinical Complete Roll-on Unscented
- Proctor & Gamble‘s Secret Crystal Clear Gel Flawless Clear Unscented
- Proctor & Gamble‘s Secret Invisible Solid Flawless Renewel Unscented (these two are different from the other one pictured)
- Revlon Cons Prod Corp‘s Mitchum Smart Solid Unscented

I do give Revlon Cons Prod Corp some credit, the Mitchum line does offer an unscented clear gel deodorant for men that does not include fragrance. Mitchum Clear Gel Unscented is the only men’s deodorant that I can find in major stores that is truly without scent. I would think men would want less perfume. I find it strange that more options are not easily available.

Unilever tends to market themselves as healthy with the Dove campaign. I do love Dove’s Sensitive Skin bar soap. I’m sad that they allow one of their deodorant’s to be marketed in a misleading way.

I would love to know why companies market a product as unscented when it clearly isn’t…. perhaps there is compelling argument to be made. I welcome company responses to smell INC.

UPDATE July 25, 2010: I’m pleased to say that Unilever‘s Dove deodorant has taken a change for the better. They lost the fragrance! It is now marketed as Dove Ultimate Sensitive Care Fragrance Free. Thank you Unilever/Dove!

I only use Dove unscented sensitive skin bar and liquid soaps. Love them.

I am not even sure if scented things would cause a reaction with my skin, I just never have liked them. Perfumes either, although a man wearing Obsession has been known to make my knees buckle!

Even decades before menopause, I used the Crystal mineral sticks, which claim only to be anti-deodorant, but have always done a splendid job w/perspiration as well, and I am quite the sweater. I'll never use anything else, as I'm very pleased with it. You simply run it under water & roll it around your armpits. It goes on very smoothly & comfortably.

It clicks into place so that when you put pressure on it (by putting it against your skin) the tube of goop doesn't push back into the ... tube. My eyeliner has the click thing too.

As for the crystals - they never worked for me. Not only did I perspire, but I did not smell like the lovely gal that I am. *ahem*

Kalik, the 'masking' fragrance is used because some of the chemicals have a distinct, unpleasant smell. So here we have people trying not to stink, putting stuff that starts out stinking until they add stuff to make it not stink onto their armpits.

AnotherSub, I have good news for you. Before menopause, I was Miss Sweaty Stinky Extraordinaire. My hair would be in dripping tendrils 5 minutes into the first dance. Post-meno, I barely get dewy no matter how hard I dance and there's nothing much to smell. I can get away with using just the crystal deodorants now for most everything.

Btw, a large part (if not all of it) of the chemical component of those crystals/crystal roll-on is potassium alum. Same stuff they use in baking, pickling, and shaving styptic pens. You should be able to find the powdered form in the grocery store, or it can be ordered online. As a cosmetic crafter, I make a spray-able deodorant from it that is unscented or custom-scented with whatever the customer prefers. I bought potassium alum in bulk and have a lot, so let me know if you can't find it and I can send you some for the cost of the shipping.

You can dust the powder on your armpits while they are still damp from showering. Even if you sweat a bit, it should still work for odor control. Or...pay the big bucks and buy that nice big funny-shaped crystal to wet and rub under your arms.

lol The only reason I started using the antipersperant less frequently is that i too started getting a reaction to it, which for me meant that my armpits started to itch like crazy!

So I really had not much choice other than to stop using it and then just use infrequently.. I dunno,.. for me it was a blessing in disguise since I am happy to find i am ok without using it daily.. cheaper that way too..

Does it last as long as they say it does? If so, I may try it. Or, I may cook up a concoction using the ideas Mistress DarkArt gave below.

Yeah, itchy armpits is a new one for me. My son was here and looked at me like I was nuts when he caught me scratching them-lol. He was like how the hell does someone have itchy armpits? I said it comes with menopause and so does crazy, so stfu.
