Status: offline 		Seems North Dakota voters have not been bitten by the 'hate government' bug and have voted to keep their property taxes intact even though the state is flush with cash due to the recent oil boom there.

The measure to eliminate property taxes failed by a resounding 76%.

Smart people, those North Dakotans.

Property Taxes

All real property in the state is subject to tax by the state, counties, townships, and municipalities. Residential property is taxed as 9% of assessed value. For the most part, personal property is exempt from property tax. Personal property of utilities companies that are assessed by the State board of Equalization is subject to property tax. Household personal property, inventories, and machinery and equipment used in trade or manufacture are exempt from property taxes. Machinery and equipment used in refining products from oil or gas extracted from the earth is deemed to be real property and therefore subject to property taxes. A mobile home used as a residence or place of business is also subject to a property tax.

There is also a Homestead Tax Credit available to senior citizens (65+) or disabled persons who own or rent their home. Your income, plus the income of your spouse and any dependents, may not exceed $26,000 for the calendar year preceding the assessment date. Your assets may not exceed $75,000. Status: offline 		It appears that both Democrat and Republican politicians opposed the elimination of property taxes. My question is, if they can find a way to work together in N Dakota, what lesson can the politicians in DC learn from this?

2) Get input from constituents instead of Rush, Beck, etc.
3) Realize the governance is compromise. Refusal to compromise is refusal to govern.
4) Look at structural economics instead of employing knee-jerk "pay highest taxes" crap
5) Understand that saving money for hard times is prudent behavior

Wisconsin, not so much; and Iowa goes a little flaky every so often.

And the local governments in ND are correct. Witness what happened to California's public education system over the past three decades:

Schools financed mostly by property taxes were declared a violation of the constitution of the state of California in Serrano vs. Priest (1971). This was followed by the Proposition 13 which limited the tax rate for real estate thereby greatly reducing property taxes.

And today, the California public school system, once considered one of the best in the country ranks 48th.

A properly functioning society requires taxes. Anyone who doesn't think so is welcome to move to Greece.

Status: offline 		I agree with you. I also earn just over $20,000/yr. and believe my income taxes overall (federal, state, county, city) are too low. School taxes are my highest, nearly $700 a year which is a part of my property tax bill and that totals just under a grand as I have a small house and very little property in a poor intercity neighborhood.

The only reason I complain about my school tax bill is because our schools are horrible, they are always doing "capital improvement" (remodeling and rebuilding) but a lot of schools don't even have enough text books for all the students and our superintendent is one of the highest paid in the country. It pisses me off.

Hello.

But she IS writing out extra checks. So are you. So is everyone. As federal taxes keep dropping over the past few decades, state and local taxes steadily rose, at a much faster pace, to attempt to pick up the slack.

Charlene Nelson, head of Empower the Taxpayer, the grassroots organization pushing Measure 2, had wanted to eliminate a tax that she considers unfair because it pushes many local citizens out of their homes who are on fixed incomes or have lost their jobs.



thats the whole problem with property taxes. you have shit for an economy and peoples taxes rising according to inflation as a result of the shit for economy and they are all on fixed income and that is the REAL problem.

People ojn fixed income are getting FORCED out of their homes, I see it literally every damn day around here, because property taxes are a secured debt and they cannot do shit about it.

The people in dakota didnt want the taxation it was cleverly written to distance them from rights and they chose to have their rights, which in the case as seen above its no different than asking you if you prefer to be shot with a remington or a winchester.
