Not sure if it's been done already (likely it has, but it never hurts to consider): I'm thinking of messaging the mods asking if threads could be locked after a set period of time automatically. Some topics will always rotate around again, and maybe links to previous discussions can help with perspective; after a while, though, there isn't much point in making a new post on an old thread.

What I'm wondering is the amount of time that would be reasonable - one month? Three? This would be since the last post was made, so something that remains current is unaffected. I'm not sure what time frame to reference, but there ought to be a reasonable figure. Since it would affect everyone, no reason not to ask everyone what they think. This seems the most appropriate place to do so.

Do you feel it's a reasonable request, and if so, what time frame would you recommend?

i haggled with myself over this. on the one hand, it is irritating to see an old thread revived, esp if it's a one liner "agree". on the other hand, i am for people being able to express themselves constructively, and against limiting where any person may wish to post.

i am leaning towards locking the threads, two weeks after the last post.

I believe they use the three month period. However, I don't know if they can lock all the threads. People tend to report the older threads that are brought up and scream Necro!

Just so you know, a four-year-old thread was recently revived. That's why I was asking. Maybe there isn't anything in place to auto-lock, but hey, can't hurt to offer the suggestion.

I think that one was revived because it was referred to in another thread that is current. I figured it would happen. Blame Lockit!

There is no way to make everyone happy on this one, so, I figure I will let the folks who run the site decide.

Thanks. I knew there had to be something already said, I just didn't find it with the search function. Much appreciated!

Oddly enough, I'm against the locking of threads. Yes, I hate, hate, HATE threads being necro'd over silly stuff. (OK, we've all done it, but it's still something we should look for to avoid the Mods having to do more work.) However, there have been occasions that bringing a thread back by the OP to update their story who actually started the thread, how a court case we discuss here has been settled, or something of the like are usually exceptions to the rule. I even considered it Myself recently when I was going to use some of the material that I've written on the Poly board that I was going to be using when I presented at Northern Exposure last weekend. Since that possibility had been discussed during the thread, it would have been an update situation.

Ninety days of nothing = autolock for most threads. Stuff in randomness, not necessarily, but otherwise? Start another thread and link to the old ones if you feel the need.

Won't happen, anyway.

I personally don't mind the reviving of old threads no matter how old. I kinda like when people find them and have something new to add. It's fun to see the old entertainment and replies compared to the new ones. Plus it keeps topics from being rehashed over and over and over again every few months when the old thread could just be used.
