As an art lover and wannabe artist, I can admire, respect their work, be inspired by them, and still not agree with all of their lifestyle choices.

I think part of it for me was that she did concerts where *if* she showed up she was so loaded that you couldn't understand her. We saw one, where she was hanging onto the microphone to stand up, forgot the songs and at one point asked where she was. She cancelled and no showed at a lot events.

As opposed to Keith Richards who has never missed a gig due to his drug use, unless you count when he hit his head falling out of a coconut tree.

FR
There's only one Keith Richards[;)] they should probably
study him at Harvard Medical School.

I think her parents are trying to do something
positive. I'm really happy about the money going
to after school music programs for
underprivileged kids. The arts have been
so slashed in the public schools

I think Amy was very talented very messed up
and was an addict who died from her addiction.
But what she was or wasn't as a person doesn't
have anything to do with her talent.
People like Eric Clapton and Johnny Cash
got clean. Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker,
Hank Sr, Judy Garland. Jackson Pollack
and many others didn't.
Some artists are assholes as people.
I'm disgusted by what Woody Allen did
in his private life. But I found myself
watching his last movie the other night
and I enjoyed it. And I judge Allen in a
way I wouldn't judge someone with a
addiction. He's an asshole but a talented
one.
I don't think addiction or self destructive
behaviour should be romanticized.
I think looking to celebrities as role models
is a mistake. Hero worship in general
isn't a great idea. If there are things about
a person you admire be it their music
or something they've done for charity
it's best to keep it in perspective.
They're just human beings with good
points and bad points like everyone
else.

I think role models should be folks who have actually done something to better the lives as others. Such as Jon Bon Jovi http://www.jbjsoulkitchen.org/ just for one. He also actively participates with Habitat for Humanity. Not that it's a secret that he has, but that he continues to do so after the cameras stop says a lot, IMO.

I think I see the disconnect. The article was about being inspiring. Not about being a role model. Two totally different things, in my book. Inspiration can come from the ugliest and darkest of places.

Role models are a different thing entirely.

I'm not sure what you mean about companies. Kids are impressionable. would you want YOUR kid 'impressed' by an 'idol' who self-destructed with drugs and alcohol?

I love the Doors, and I think Jim Morrison kicked serious ass. But he killed himself by substance abuse. WHen I was 15 or so, my Mom and Stepdad introduced me to Joseph Haydn (for an example). 77 yrs old at death, no drugs or alcohol related death, there. And still considered brilliant by well-rounded music afficiandos.

In 20 years, who is going to know who Amy was? Except the same type of people who still know who Haydn is?
(GAH!! hate when I do that!!)

For clarity: by companies I meant any part of the industry that turns a buck on an artist, while letting them destroy themselves (and especially those who shell out to glamourize certain lifestyles...) Those companies suck large, but I don't blame them for the artist's choice, nor do I blame the artist when a teenager does drugs. Everyone's got a choice, even the stupid choices, to make.

My kid is obsessed with Winnie the Pooh. I think I'm good. [:D] I, on the other hand, had people like Picasso thrust in my face as a kid by my father. I made a conscious choice to dislike both the man and his work. I see no intrinsic value in cubism whatsoever. That's just a personal choice though.

Good things come out of bad people. (The reverse is also true.) How that defines someone else, I'm not sure; but then, I am a staunch believer in the individual and their ability for self-definition. Idealistic or not, I choose to see potential in people.

Fair point.
