I wasn't aware that personal struggles discounted an individual from being considered an inspiration. In that case, I suppose that I better go find a whole new list of people to admire. Bye Fitzgerald, Faulkner, and Tennessee Williams. Can't forget Whitney or Heath Ledger either. They all gotta go. I'll picks Jesus as my new inspirational figure. He never fucked up as far as I know. But I rarely go to church, so I could be mistaken.

I liked her music. She had soul. And she had problems. I hope she rests in peace and I hope others will learn from her mistakes.

I dunno, I like that her parents are trying to make a lot of good for other folks out of the heartache they feel. To me it shows what good can come out of just about anything.

I am sure she inspired many through her music.

Sigh. Sometimes this life shit is so damn complicated.

Yep.

I haven't found a human being yet that wasn't deeply flawed. A few of them have even managed to inspire me.

I agree that she is no role model. And I don't see what was inspiring about her life.

I commend her parents though, for trying to do positive things with her memory. It's sad that her choices led to her self-destruction. She should have had a great life.

I found her voice inspiring, her style of delivery and I don't know who writes the lyrics in her songs but dang... those had meaning. It is a great shame that drinking (and drugs) kept her from more but so many go that way. If I get any inspiration from her its from the voice. I don't expect anything more than that. Personally I think we put too much value on celebrities, they are just people like any other and don't need pedestals or spotlights unless they are on stage/camera.

I think some of the greatest messages can come from the darkest places - either our own or someone else's. If her life, music, hell, and death are inspiring to someone else, then that's beautiful, and adds meaning to her struggles.

This was particularly touching to me:

"Winehouse's parents, Mitch and Janis Winehouse, launched the U.S. branch of the foundation at Joe's Pub in New York City in April. While the foundation had already raised a million pounds for U.K.-based children's hospices, the mission of the U.S. branch is to support music therapy and after-school programs for disadvantaged children."

Yeah, I'd say this is a good thing.

Inspiration can come in many forms.

I would view it as a tribute by her parents. Not as inspiration from Amy, myself.

ETA: the inspiration, to me, would BE her parents....

And her parents were inspired by the events of their daughter.

And anyone listening to Amy's music that is touched by it...is inspired by it.

The ripple effect goes beyond what any one person can see. No one person can decide that another is not an inspiration to others. Because we just don't know.

The worst parts can be the best inspiration in the form of a warning.

What do you want to see, mah darlin' GT?

Now see, to ME, I only see her parents as enablers and now, using her fame for their own. Especially her father.

*snort*

RU.. I want to see a society where overpaid *koff* "icons" such as pop/music/sport/etc stars are NOT viewed as ROLE MODELS, that have done nothing but self-aggrandizement and are venerated after their self inflicted deaths.

I think role models should be folks who have actually done something to better the lives as others. Such as Jon Bon Jovi http://www.jbjsoulkitchen.org/ just for one. He also actively participates with Habitat for Humanity. Not that it's a secret that he has, but that he continues to do so after the cameras stop says a lot, IMO.

There are others, who while I think they may be awesome in their superstar personaes, have yet to show they have any empathy for those folks who are far less fortunate.

amy was an amazing singer with a lot of problems. to say she was a horrible person because she did drugs is the same as someone saying that you must molest children because you are on a bdsm website....

I can see where you're coming from, GT. I just don't like to put the onus on companies, they will always do deplorable things for money because that is their focus. I prefer to see ownership in the people who choose their idols. I know younger people are impressionable, but they're not necessarily stupid. Let them see things for what they really are and decide. That's how we all learn.

No one said she was horrible person. They've said she wasn't a good role model. Big difference.

I'm not sure what you mean about companies. Kids are impressionable. would you want YOUR kid 'impressed' by an 'idol' who self-destructed with drugs and alcohol?

I love the Doors, and I think Jim Morrison kicked serious ass. But he killed himself by substance abuse. WHen I was 15 or so, my Mom and Stepdad introduced me to Joseph Haydn (for an example). 77 yrs old at death, no drugs or alcohol related death, there. And still considered brilliant by well-rounded music afficiandos.

In 20 years, who is going to know who Amy was? Except the same type of people who still know who Haydn is?
(GAH!! hate when I do that!!)

Greedy, I seriously believe that an issue that is a personal hot button for you, is colouring your vision pretty dramatically.

I am going to go out on a limb and say that most artists abuse drugs, in some form or another. Whether it be booze, illegal drugs, or prescription drugs. As an art lover and wannabe artist, I can admire, respect their work, be inspired by them, and still not agree with all of their lifestyle choices.

We are all, every single one of us, deeply flawed in some way. Being the history buff that I am, I know that some of the greatest figures in history were also some of the most flawed.

The music industry has lost an awful lot of wonderful artists long before old age. Take Michael Jackson for instance. Look at how he influenced the music of his time. He was beyond inspirational. So many of today's young musicians credit him, among other greats, as being their musical hero.........and inspiration.

Amy Winehouse did something pretty fucking amazing. She took a genre of music and introduced it to a whole new generation all while putting her own special twist on it. She was a gifted writer and musician. Her ability to inspire has already been seen in many of the artists that are gaining attention now.

Substance abuse is not something to admire. But it can inspire. If even the path not to take. Substance abuse doesn't mean the abuser has no value. Either as an artist or a human being. Decades ago, entertainers, politicians, artists... were better able to hide their flaws. Today, everything gets played out on Twitter and Facebook. There are people waiting with cameras to get the money shot. There are 'friends' willing to sell out, even a false story, for a few thousand dollars. I doubt there is more fucked up people, just more exposure of the fuck ups.

There are a lot of entertainers who I know have been inspirational to other, young dreamers. Some I personally like and many I don't. I was never a Michael Jackson fan. But I know without a shadow of a doubt that he, and others, regardless of their flaws, have contributed hugely. Not only to our culture but to future entertainers dreams. "If he/she can do it....!"
