100 Years ago, Montana, facing political corruption passed a law limiting the amount of money permitted in state campaigns. It had been so bad prior to the law that the first US senator from Montana had bribed his way into DC and they refused to seat him.

Thanks to Citizens United and a 5-4 decision by the Supreme Court on Monday, Montana no longer has the security of limiting money in state and local elections. The Court refused to hear the case and revisit Citizens United in doing so, saying instead that states must abide by the Citizens United ruling.

Yeah, thats a huge difference between the US political system and the Canadian Federal political system.. In Canada, there is only a small amount that can be donated by each person/corporation to a politician.. And in Canada, a federal political party gets most of the money from the govt for their election campaign based on the number of votes the party got in the last election.. That might seem strange to Americans but imo it works pretty good.. especially since Canadian Federal elections are over very quick (so less time = less advertising = less cost), they last only 2 months from start to finish and the election dates are not set like in the US, so harder for politicians to game the system for their benefit and re-election.. The amount that gets spent on US election campaigns is staggering to me.. JMO..

You do remember this is the same court that allowed unlimited contributions in Federal elections. They gave corportations freedome of speech.

Are you saying that Romney is a serial killer?

He numbered him with John Wayne Gacy in that poignant post, didn't he?

If that's the standard you want to go by, sure. However, Romney's kill list pales in comparison to Obama's. According to the latest numbers, the Bamster killed 36,800 people last year alone. And another 168,000 murdered in the previous year...

The four members of the court’s liberal wing dissented in an opinion by Justice Stephen G. Breyer, who said that Citizens United itself had been a mistake.

“Even if I were to accept Citizens United,” Justice Breyer continued, “this court’s legal conclusion should not bar the Montana Supreme Court’s finding, made on the record before it, that independent expenditures by corporations did in fact lead to corruption or the appearance of corruption in Montana. Given the history and political landscape in Montana, that court concluded that the state had a compelling interest in limiting independent expenditures by corporations.”

Justice Breyer added, “Montana’s experience, like considerable experience elsewhere since the court’s decision in Citizens United, casts grave doubt on the court’s supposition that independent expenditures do not corrupt or appear to do so.”

In this case Alito and especially Scalia are fucking hypocrites. Arizona is ruled a "sovereign" state in a republic of states, but Montana... Those bastards have to abide by Citizens United, by golly, it's the LAW OF THE LAND!

Cmon guys, either all states have rights, or none do... Knock off the bulllshit and stick to interpreting what's constitutional and whats not.

That's another whole kettle of fish and completely off topic but:

The Supreme's have also rules that unions must put it to a vote among their members before spending any money on political campaigns, but a corporation doesn't need to put it to a vote with the stockholders for the same reason.
