Well the only time I have ever heard the expression used is when my gay cousin is about, I have never heard it used anywhere else, also if you google search the words Dom bear you just get pages of gay things in images, video and normal web, I have not heard it at a munch ever nor when I have spoken to friends.

I am not an expert though so am willing to stand corrected.

While I have heard straight (hairy) men refer to themselves as bear, I'm most familiar with this in terms of husky hairy gay men: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=bear
