perverseangelic -> Gender on the net. A request for opinions/information (10/31/2004 10:16:36 AM)

This isn't spesifically BDSM related, but as many of you here are invovled in the online community, I hoped I'd find some opinions here. And as everyone is generally nice and willing to share information, I hoped you'd be willing to help me with this.

So........< begin form letter ;) >

At the University I attend, I’m currently taking a class called Introduction to Feminist Theory. For our term project, we’re trying to create projects that resolve several ideas and theoretical opinions into one of our own.

In hopes of dealing with something at least semi-unique, I’ve decided to do my project on gender and gender presentation on the internet, specifically in chat rooms and forums. To this end, I’m conducting a fairly informal survey of individuals on the net, both their presentations of gender and their perceptions of it. I’d very much like as many responses as I can get, because the more varied, the more likely I am to come up with something fairly unified.

So…if you’re interested, please please please respond to these questions, or all the ones that apply to you. You’re welcome to post here, or to e-mail to me either at this site or as [email protected] or corner me on IM (AIM and YIM) as perverseangelic .

Upfront, anything posted in reply to this, or sent to me regarding this topic will be considered fair game for my paper. I will use no identifying marks save screen name, and at your request I will alter the screen name, but please do include that request with answers.

Thank you –very- much for your time, and hopefully your responses :).

--In relation to yourself:--
1. What is your gender identification offline? Ie- what gender do you call yourself?

2. Have you ever presented an online persona of a different gender from yourself?

2a. How did you go about creating that online persona? What methods did you use to ensure that you were perceived as the gender you were presenting?

2b. Did you find yourself to be perceived most often as the gender you were presenting? Did other question the gender you were presenting?

3. When you are presenting the gender you identify as, do you find that people question your “true” gender online? Have you been given any reasons for this?

4. How often are you asked to give your gender when entering a chat room? An IM conversation? On a message board/forum?

--In relation to other people—
1. Can you tell the gender of people you are talking to without asking? Ie can you ‘spot’ people in a chat room who are presenting a different gender? Can you tell when someone IM’s you that they are not what they say they are?

1a. How? What signs do you use to determine this?

2. How often do you ask the gender of the individual/individuals your talking to? In IM? In chat rooms? On a message board/forum?

3. Is it important to know the gender of the person your talking to? Why?

Thank you once again for your time in doing this. I very much appreciate it, and if you happen to be interested will share the finished paper with you.

Thank you –very- much for your time, and hopefully your responses :).

--In relation to yourself:--
1. What is your gender identification offline? Ie- what gender do you call yourself? F

2. Have you ever presented an online persona of a different gender from yourself? No

2a. How did you go about creating that online persona? What methods did you use to ensure that you were perceived as the gender you were presenting? tell them to check my profile, give them my website that has a pic, webcam occassionally for private chat.

2b. Did you find yourself to be perceived most often as the gender you were presenting? Did other question the gender you were presenting? The only times people have thought i was male is in pogo games because my nic there is yourpalhere and some think that is a male.

3. When you are presenting the gender you identify as, do you find that people question your “true” gender online? Have you been given any reasons for this? Not once i tell them i am female.

4. How often are you asked to give your gender when entering a chat room? An IM conversation? On a message board/forum? Frequently in pogo chat

--In relation to other people—
1. Can you tell the gender of people you are talking to without asking? Ie can you ‘spot’ people in a chat room who are presenting a different gender? Can you tell when someone IM’s you that they are not what they say they are? Usually

1a. How? What signs do you use to determine this? In private chat i only talk to those whose gender i already know. In open chat if i'm not sure, i read their profile. Sometime i can tell by the conversation: females seem to be more sympathetic and supportive of those discussing personal problems and health issues, but there are always exceptions; it's usually men who ask if anyone wants to cyber LOL.

2. How often do you ask the gender of the individual/individuals your talking to? In IM? In chat rooms? On a message board/forum? Occassionally in public chat if they don't have a profile.

3. Is it important to know the gender of the person your talking to? Why? Not usually. If they appear to be flirting then i will check their profile.

2. Have you ever presented an online persona of a different gender from yourself?
Yes

2a. How did you go about creating that online persona?I thought of a particular person (friend) and used him as a guide.
What methods did you use to ensure that you were perceived as the gender you were presenting? I had plenty of photos (he was my friend after all) and I paid particular attention to my speach patterns.

2b. Did you find yourself to be perceived most often as the gender you were presenting?I was never questioned Did other question the gender you were presenting?

--In relation to yourself:--
1. What is your gender identification offline? Ie- what gender do you call yourself? Female

2. Have you ever presented an online persona of a different gender from yourself?
Nope

2a. How did you go about creating that online persona? What methods did you use to ensure that you were perceived as the gender you were presenting?
Actually I did nothing. I like being gender neutral.

2b. Did you find yourself to be perceived most often as the gender you were presenting? Did other question the gender you were presenting? \

I usually am upfront about who I am.

3. When you are presenting the gender you identify as, do you find that people question your “true” gender online? Have you been given any reasons for this?

A couple of times I have been accused of being a man. I was once told I had too strong of a personality.

4. How often are you asked to give your gender when entering a chat room? An IM conversation? On a message board/forum?

No, however I really don’t chat a lot online.

--In relation to other people—
1. Can you tell the gender of people you are talking to without asking? Ie can you ‘spot’ people in a chat room who are presenting a different gender? Can you tell when someone IM’s you that they are not what they say they are?

Perhaps if I chatted more. I take people at face value usually. If you want to lie to me about who you are and secure the fact you will never have any sort of relationship with me that is your perogative.

1a. How? What signs do you use to determine this?

I don’t.

2. How often do you ask the gender of the individual/individuals your talking to? In IM? In chat rooms? On a message board/forum?

Rarely, sex means very little to me. I don’t think a man has any opinions that matter any less than any woman. And vice versa

3. Is it important to know the gender of the person your talking to? Why?

Not at all. If I were seeking a mate in life it would of course. I think you already know the answer why.

You can use anything you wish about me Perverse. If you need more info just let me know.

Shdw3507 -> RE: Gender on the net. A request for opinions/information (11/4/2004 12:33:33 PM)

1. What is your gender identification offline? Ie- what gender do you call yourself? Often refer to myself as a guy i am pretty casual.

2. Have you ever presented an online persona of a different gender from yourself?
Nope
2a. How did you go about creating that online persona? What methods did you use to ensure that you were perceived as the gender you were presenting?

2b. Did you find yourself to be perceived most often as the gender you were presenting? Did other question the gender you were presenting?

3. When you are presenting the gender you identify as, do you find that people question your “true” gender online? Have you been given any reasons for this? The only people who question it are really paranoid and woul question you no matter what gender you give

4. How often are you asked to give your gender when entering a chat room? An IM conversation? On a message board/forum? Almost every time

--In relation to other people—
1. Can you tell the gender of people you are talking to without asking? Ie can you ‘spot’ people in a chat room who are presenting a different gender? --In relation to yourself:--
1. What is your gender identification offline? Ie- what gender do you call yourself?Female

2. Have you ever presented an online persona of a different gender from yourself? No

2a. How did you go about creating that online persona? What methods did you use to ensure that you were perceived as the gender you were presenting?I put it in my profile for that SN. I do not attempt to represent myself in anyway other than my normal speech pattern. Most people who meet me in real life say you type just like you talk.

2b. Did you find yourself to be perceived most often as the gender you were presenting? Mostly, but not always.Did other question the gender you were presenting?Yes, sometimes I am perceived as male. I have taken numerous personality tests that guess my sex as male, then question me as to am I SURE I am female??? laughing. Some males, particularly redneck ones think I am male not female.

3. When you are presenting the gender you identify as, do you find that people question your “true” gender online? Have you been given any reasons for this? See above.

4. How often are you asked to give your gender when entering a chat room? An IM conversation? On a message board/forum?I rarely enter chat rooms, IM's are usually generated by someone reading my profile and they already know what sex I list. If I start an IM conversation, usually it is with someone I have been contacted by previously, or a realtime friend.

--In relation to other people—
1. Can you tell the gender of people you are talking to without asking? Ie can you ‘spot’ people in a chat room who are presenting a different gender? Can you tell when someone IM’s you that they are not what they say they are?Usually, only once did they make it past the initial conversation. And that one went out of their way to hide their sex, it took three times chatting with them before they slipped up by mentioning a totally female health issue.

1a. How? What signs do you use to determine this?Normally the speech pattern gives it away, females tend to be more wordy.

2. How often do you ask the gender of the individual/individuals your talking to? In IM? In chat rooms? On a message board/forum?Rarely, if they dont have a profile, I dont chat.

3. Is it important to know the gender of the person your talking to? Why?I dont see this question as a guess, everyone wants to know WHO they are talking to. If you cant see the person, something about them to direct the conversation is a must. Even if I am "meeting" an animal for the first time I think it is only correct to address them as the correct sex."Here Butch, you are a pretty girl"?????

Thank you once again for your time in doing this. I very much appreciate it, and if you happen to be interested will share the finished paper with you. SN is fine, but not the rest as in collarme. I do NOT want any undue attention to my lifestyle.
