TIm, I would have thought it would spark a discussion of transgenders in the church, if this was a good thing.

Obviously, I think it is.

You know, I think that what is at the end of all this is the fact that transgendered people just want to get on with their lives. There is so much more to this world than being trans - and yet, when it's you, it can become all encompassing. Like I said in another topic, there is nothing about a trans person that keeps them from being a good worker; paying their taxes; walking their dog; loving their children, families and friends - or in this case, preaching and practicing religion and ministering to their fellow human beings.

When religion actually practices the love and inclusion that is in the base Christian theology, it can be a very attractive and wonderful thing. That there are trans folk out there who are able to step outside themselves to minister to others is something I find heartening. That there are congregations out there who will see the authentic self and let that person shine in their lives is amazing. Let them all get on with it, in a positive, life affirming way say I. :)

The only thing I have to say on this discussion is that I cringe a little every time you write transgenders. You shouldn't be using transgender as a noun; a group of transgendered people are not transgenders. They are transgendered people, folk, etc, or trans* people/folk for short.

Does it bother you when people use Christians or Jews? What about Russians or Americans? Whites or Blacks? Homosexuals or heterosexuals? I could go on, but I think you get the point.

well, yanno, until there is a better option in re: church related stuff, Transgendered is the best I can do.

SOrry if you feel that that is not adequate, but I am going off the Churches position here and also their terminology, so really, take it up with the Church.

if it is uncomfy for YOU, then that is ON you. Just sayin'.

I too am a proud lifelong Episcopalian. This milestone is wonderful but not surprising given their quiet, natural inclusiveness
and history of activism for social equality in my lifetime. We organized for civil rights and anti apartheid in my youth, have ordained
both women and openly gay and lesbian priests and bishops for years. I think our current presiding bishop(national leader) is a woman,

The Washington Post reports that the House of Bishops also voted to approve a provisional rite for blessing same-sex couples. Of course, we've been doing that at St. Margaret's for ages.

Sorry I seemed to have upset everyone. I was corrected by a trans person when I used the word trangenders, and I just figured I'd pass it along.

It's all good Reform. :)

Some people get all hung up on terminology, gender pronouns, and the like. My personal opinion is that that sort of persnicketyness can contribute to the overall discomfort the general public purports in many circles to feel with interacting with transgender folk.

For myself, as long as a person is not intentionally disrespecting me, I give people a break if they use the wrong term, and I will accept either gender, and either or both of my two names. That is my choice, but I do wish more people would adopt something like it. The angry transperson going after people for accidentally using the wrong word, name, or pronoun is so common it has pretty much become a stereotype.
