I thought I knew what the word "novice" meant in relation to BDSM, but the more I read about things and especially reading profiles and whatnot, I am finding that I am a little confused by the term now.

I see that some people consider themselves novices if they have never been collared before, some people consider themselves novices if they have only "played" and have not been in a D/s relationship before. Some think that the word means that they haven't been trained in some school of D/s.

I thought it meant that one had never submitted in anyway in real life.

Is it like defining other terms in BDSM in that is a self definition that is fuzzy? What is the definition of "novice" to you?

As you said, the meaning is going to vary.

If you are into edge play, someone who has had 20 dominants,12 collars but only played with sensual flogging is a novice if what you do is long term objectification, mumification, cutting, blood play, etc.

If you seek a long term fairly intense D/s live in relationship, someone who has been in the scene five years, attended lots of parties, had multiple partners but never a long term live in relationship, they are something of a novice.

I would say being a "novice" isn't something you can really generalize. I mean, you can unowned your whole "career",yet expertly trained to serve.. but a novice when it comes to a scene.

I would imagine the ones that list they are "novice" are probably just as confused to what they are, as you are confused trying to decipher what they mean by being a "novice".

  1. A person new to a field or activity; a beginner.

Well... that's all the definition I got initially that wasn't related to religion and vows.  It is pretty open.  I guess technically you are a novice at something if you are not experienced with it.  So that makes me a novice at most things in the BDSM world.

Most people in BDSM are novices at some aspect whether they are dom or sub by these definitions. I wonder why we are not all putting it on our profiles...smiles

I think people use the word "novice" in reference to themselves frequently because perhaps they haven't fully grasped where they "fit" into the lifestyle.. I'd say it's moreso up to the players and their partners what a 'novice' is

Novice means beginner for me.

Calling someone "a novice" in general terms usually means that they are simply "new to all this stuff that we do here."

And yes, like everything, it's best to clarify what everyone means by the term before they go agreeing or disagreeing on something over it.

Yup, you're right....I have yet to meet anyone who knows it all. I guess that is where the interests part of the profile is somewhat helpful. You can choose from beginner to expert, although it's still really relative....someone may see themselves as expert at something because they've been doing it for 6 months and I may think that 6 months of the same activity makes one a novice. I don't think there is a clearly definitive answer.

Words - got to adore them.

A novice is someone who is inexperienced in a certain field.
From a religious/spiritual/community p.o.v - it usually means a person who has not taken their final commitment - hence the understanding of some people to call themself 'novice' if they have not been collared... some people see it as the 'final phase' in their 'enlightenment'.

I am a novice in some areas, and not in others.  Just another label that needs clarifying just exactly what the person means by using it.

I agree, as I often do, with LA. I personally use the term "newbie" as I am fairly new to all types of BDSM play and D/s.

"Novice" means "inexperienced". A person can be experienced in one aspect of something, and still be a novice in others. I am experienced in street-scootering. I am a novice in motorcycle racing. If you ask me if I ride motorbikes, my answer would be yes, but my level of experience varies with different types of biking. BDSM is the same way. You can be experienced in one thing, and a complete novice at something else. I'm experienced in service training, but an utter novice at Shibari.

Just like everything else in the lifestyle definitions are sometimes a grey area. Some days I'm a chocolate vanilla swirl with carmel sauce and nuts others Straight chocolate with all the goo I can get.

Novice to me is just that, they need to be trained in even the most basic etiquette items, everything has to be explained (usually more than once) they usually have ideas from discussion of what they want to try then end up loving the things that used to be limits.

Julia (my bestest friend)...I see our phone conversation got that brain of yours on fire again.......lol... I admit...I still feel like a "Novice" so to speak..but....I can imagine that everyone's a "novice" if they decide to take a "new" Dom, right? Just my thoughts.

Fast reply from the over thinker***

Does novice need to reflect lack of experience in the physical activity only?  What if someone has participated in a certain activity numerous times but is unable to make a mental connection or understand a connection between the act and the result, could this make them an experienced novice?

Sure call me on my overthinking....

I actually had to sleep on it and what i concluded was that i could be an expert driver and not know what the heck took place when i turned the key.

I think that novice is not just a lack of experience but also an attitude. I mean, yes you can be experienced in some things and less so in others but I feel that there is an overall feel to a novice that goes past levels of physical experience.

An example of a trait many novice subs share would be topping from the bottom.
So, really, when I think of novice I think of the fundamentals that we all have to learn no matter what our position within the Lifestyle.
