They made me drink twice as much this round.  The doctor told me she'd give me ten minutes to finish it.

Have you had an ultrasound yet?
That is the best, you drink tons of water, then they press on your tummy.  The tech told me she never sees pregnant women move so fast....when they are told the test is over and they can pee.

Yeah.  I had it a couple of months ago.  I drank five bottles of water before I went in there.  I don't think I've squirmed that much in my life.  And it didn't help that Aiden kept mooning the camera and they couldn't get a good shot.  As soon as the lab technician would say, "OK, we're going to try to get a shot of his head," Aiden would tumble around and show a nice shot of his ass.  <sniff> He acts just like his Daddy.  [:D]  LOL.

The doctor said her biggest concern was not that I would have a large baby, but more for the immediate respiratory problems he will have when he is born.  I didn't completely understand the reasoning for the respiratory problems that babies born to mothers with gestational diabetes have.  She explained it to me, and apparently when my body dumps all the sugar it can't process a large part of it goes to Aiden.  He, therefore, develops a sugar addiction.  When he is born he goes through immediate withdrawal, hence the respiratory arrest.  That scares me.

I probably had gestational diabetes with my firstborn but that was so long ago they didn't test for it. With my second I was tested and diagnosed with GD. Given her age, (she's 21), they didn't have the nice meters for diabetics that they do now. I watched my diet and did my best. Both of my chicklets were well over 10 pounds when they were born, but my ex's family birthed big babies so it was genetic on their father's side of the family. (IMO *he* should have been the one carrying them around.) They were also very past due. The youngest ended up in intermediate neonatal ICU but only for 12 hours.

As I said, she's now 21. She's 6 foot tall, weighs 300 lb and played offensive-defensive guard on the boy's football team in high school. She's got some serious muscles! I don't think she's been hurt by what happened. If she was, my medical team and I did the best we could with what we had available to us at the time.

You'll be fine and so will Aiden. Medicine has advanced by leaps and bounds in the past 20 years!

I don't have diabetes!  WOOT!  Apparently I still have problems with the level of my blood sugar, so I have to watch my diet, but there's no diabetes to be found.  What a relief!  Many thanks to all of you who kept me informed and positive!

Hugs,

Michelle

I have worked with pregnant women, and it seems MDs run the test somewhere usually between the 6th and 7th months, though some do it earlier depending on risk factors.  As to being on insulin the rest of your life, the majority I have experience with never used it again once the baby was born. As to whether you will need it, many times Mom watches the carbs and only uses insulin if needed, and some never have to use it.  My suggestion in to relax until you talk with the Doc.  If you are GD, then make sure he has you referred to a dietician who specializes in it with diabetic mothers.  While you are at it, talk with her about a diet for after pregnancy to help prevent diabetes at a later age.  Until recently, medical schools did not require a nutrition class and many doctors do not give a great education to their patients on this aspect.  Good luck, and congratulations on the pregnancy!
