Invited to a foreign place, a king did venture quick and bold; and found a forest fair. The locals gave him warm embrace, but trusted not the forest old and would not enter there. A maiden tarried with the king, his company she kindly kept and so they traveled on. They found the forest near a spring, and to the edge he strode, she crept, they entered and were gone. He guided her with voice and hand, and as they stepped into the wood a peace upon them fell. She followed as he gave command past root and leaf, until they stood in meadows bright, enspelled. The king did stumble on the ground, the maiden, fearful, turned to flee but stopped and gave him aid. Within her gentle warmth he found a princess; then he bent to knee to name her, and she stayed. They lived as one in meadows bright, but not alone, for ghosts did hide within devilish intent. They visited the king at night, with whispers dark, and so they tried to undo his content. He woke confused and washed in dread, and to the princess he did turn with questions borne of fear. The princess, startled from their bed was so dismayed that she did spurn the king's words from her ear. She could not look into his eyes, his questions stole the peaceful mien the meadows had instilled. The king made fool then realized his folly, and the ghosts were seen; their mischief was fulfilled. He begged forgiveness for his deed and hesitant, the princess did consent to stay with him. He strode then to the ghosts with speed, and faced them in the trees amid their woeful, evil hymn. Ignoring their enchanted verse he stood unmoved, with pure intent he cast them from his heart. They wailed as they spat their curse, but he held fast, did not relent until they did depart. The king returned and sat with her, and saw the ghosts his words had brought with words that carried doubt. He knelt and waited, did defer; his quiet love was known and not dismissed, but known throughout. He took her hand into his own and gently squeezed it as he spoke of how his heart was true. To never let her be alone, to keep her safe; and then he stroked her hair, and smiled anew. The princess looked then at her king, and felt his love, and knew that she belonged within his arms. She knelt with him, and so did bring him peace; and they lived merrily among the meadow's charms.
