Just thought for today:

Always buy full tang on your swords and knifes.

I had an old broadsword that I had laying around the house, not one I was particularly fond of but I had a few large cardboard boxes that needed to be cut down. I figured OH JOY target practice.

Grabbed my blade and ran outside. No sooner did I give it a full strength blow, hoping to cleave the box into, the handle shattered and I saw the lousy construction of the thing.

Always buy full tang, always buy American!

I buy pretty, because I have nothing to stab at the moment.

Another problem with cheap replica type blades is
the metal, if your going to buy a sword which may
get even a tiny bit of practical playing with, good steel
is important Ask this guy!

As a rule of thumb for anyone who doesn't want to
get into all the types of metal but wants a safe cheap
blade that will take abuse, I'd recomend anything by
cold steel.

You buy a sword off eBay from china and you deserve to
be like the guy in the clip.

I just use a magic sword.
Or does AD&D not count?

I'm the type to buy if I like it. Whether it's one dollar or a thousand, and whether it's from USA or china or where ever. That might be bad, but I like what I like.
I do recycle, if that makes it better, lol.

You see when you said old, I presumed you meant a well crafted antique and not a piece of crap you had decided to buy that was now laying around the house.

My dad was a collector.
He had very few if any American pieces; pieces from the Middle East, India, Scotland and some other foreign lands yes.
The majority of them were museum quality.

I think the real lesson here is to know before you buy.
If you are buying something that is mostly designed for decoration, that is fine, but don't expect it to be durable.
If you are wanting something utilitarian then make sure it is well made before you buy it.
And if it seems too good to be true in price, it probably is.

When I think sword, I think of my Patton Sabre.
In fact, when I bought a waster for Renaissance style fencing, I finally found one with the same balance.

Oh I have good quality knives, and swords, and unfortunately I also have crap too.

The one that I lost today, was from Pakistan, but I assumed and I do know about assuming. That as heavy as it was, as large as it was it would take a beating before it gave up the ghost. I have to admit that I figured that it its large size would have taken up for some of its other weaknesses.

Now as for quality, I have my stiletto and I have a Kukri with a horn sheath, brought to me from Nepal, by my globe trotting aunt. it looks like this http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a5/Khukri-knife.jpg except the sheath is made of horn, not metal.

I also keeps a bowie or two handy, as well as a lock back in glove box and a multi tool in my ditch bag.
