On the other side I set my location to Pennsylvania many moons ago. Now that I am living in Virginia, the "View New Local Users" link shows me people living in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Occasionally New York. It seems that the people who view my profile, that don't come because of my witty banter here, are from Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Occasionally New York. I have changed both the city and state of residence. Am I missing a zip-code entry?

even if you do, it is not a required field so its hit and miss no matter what.

The state, however, is a required field. Even choosing the geographical center of the state would put the people searching locally in a very different location than NYC.

The zip code field is found on the MY ACCOUNT tab. This field is used to determine the distance to other users. The distance will only be incorrect if you or the other user has the wrong zip code in that field.

They could go by ADI or even isp owner locations.

The problem is not that New York and Pennsylvania are close. The problem is that New York and the very western edges of Virginia are not.

Related and not: is that why postal codes are such a PITA? [:D] I don't write intricate programs, but I do write programs weekly for work using a low-end custom VB-style language. If concatenation is an option, then it's possible to do the same calculations for Canadian codes. Same if you can pick a specific character in a STRing using something like LEFT/RIGHT commands.

IDGI: Why do you think they are tricky? All you need is a single table that matches the center of a zip code/ postal code with a map or GPS coordinate. Then it's a straight forward calculation. You can make your own table from freely available information, but I would suggest buying one. Why reinvent the wheel?

True, most code is borrowed or modified. [:D] Ahh, what can I say, I likes to tackle something from scratch! It does depend on other things though, like base code limits (language, function or otherwise). I personally don't think it would be too hard to do, but since it isn't implemented at the moment there has to be a monkey somewhere in the works. Now I want to go to the other side of my machine and play with Linux. [:-]

Gad, when I moved, the zip code kept getting reset to my former residence for several weeks. I think it took a while for code updates to quit resetting my profile.
