"Taliban Commander Says Taliban Cannot Win Afghan War"

"The Taliban leadership knows it cannot win the war in Afghanistan and is prepared to accept peace with the Afghan government, but only if the militant group plays a prominent role in the country's future, according to an interview with an alleged senior Taliban commander conducted by a former high-ranking diplomat.

The full interview, to be published in Thursday's edition of the British current affairs magazine New Statesmen, was conducted by Michael Semple, the former UN envoy to Afghanistan during Taliban rule and current fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights at Harvard. Semple is considered an authority in Pashtun politics and reportedly still has contacts within the Taliban's senior ranks.

The Taliban commander, whose name is not revealed during the interview, is said to be a senior leader who spent time at Guantanamo Bay and is described in a preview of the article as "one of the most senior surviving Taliban commanders and confidant of the movement's leadership."

Qwner... I'm afraid this is just a propaganda ploy...Can you really see, with their history and beliefs, the Taliban participating in a coalition government? Never happen in my estimation. I think it is just a way to make them look reasonable and desirable for peace when in fact they have no intention of joining in a peaceful political settlement...Of course just my opinion.

One makes peace with ther enemies.

One thing is for sure.......without some sort of representation for these folks in the government....there will never be peace.

Not necessarily…there was an Afghanistan before the Taliban and there can be one without them. All it takes is enough people to be fed up with their brutal interpretation of Islam. I think this is possible but not our place to eradicate the vermin from Afghani society…. they must do it

Alas, the Taliban are very well armed, and it's not an even fight.

I don't believe they are as well armed as US trained and equipped Afghani security forces.

No excuse there... it is only in the will to unite and defeat a relatively small, if blindly determined, sect of radicals.

I am all for maintaining air combat support and supplying Afghani forces which should be all they need.

Time for us to go and leave them to their own battles.

Time for us to go

Just this, Butch, and a long time ago.

If Obama needs to negotiate so bad, maybe he can come up with a secret deal to sell the whole country to China, to settle off some of the national debt. They have a surplus of young males in their population to get rid of, anyway.
