Re Mormonism. I saw another post that claims Mormons invented Scientology so they wouldn't look so fucking wierd.

Must give credit where credit is due iass.

Scientology was created from the book Diantics by L ron Hubbard, which when released was a science fiction book back in the early 70's. Hubbard would purchase the books from books stores to keep it on the best seller list. Once he realized how much money he could charge people who believed it as a real religion (think Stars Wars and the "force) he sold the book as a religious book and formed a church to avoid taxes.

Joseph Smith translated the book of Moroni by reading thru his hat.   Scientology couldn't possibly best that.  They at least thought it up via LSD or some other mind altering drug or psychosis.

Please don't insult the LSD. It had nothing to do with this.

Actually Dianetics was published in the 50's and L Ron invented Scientology to protect his profits from the IRS.

This.
Dianetics was published as a self help book rather than science fiction. There's some confusion about that as it was very heavily pushed by the then editor of ASF (as it was then) the ridiculous John W Campbell, who had a strong taste for half baked pseudo scientific drivel of that sort.

subspaceseven -> RE: Will Bain be Willards Watergate? (7/14/2012 8:28:39 AM)

That was later, in the 50's it was Sci-Fi

No. Dianetics is a non fiction self help book and never had any plot or other fiction elements.

Winterapple -> RE: Will Bain be Willards Watergate? (7/14/2012 9:29:53 AM)

Dianetics was never a novel. It's a self help book which gets it categorized as nonfiction.

That it's full of nonsense doesn't make
it fiction like a novel is a work of fiction.

subspaceseven -> RE: Will Bain be Willards Watergate? (7/14/2012 9:34:20 AM)

Yea, the book was not science fiction, but L. Ron was a science fiction writer in the 30, 40s and 50,s

His books include The Bare Faced Messiah, and Excalibur and a story in Astounding Science Fiction "the dangerous Dimension

Though Excalibur was a failure, L Ron thought it would be more popular than the bible

In the 50's the FBI labeled L ron as a "mental case"

So what the hell, seems like the type of guy to create a religion, no worse then people a couple thousand years ago

Winterapple -> RE: Will Bain be Willards Watergate? (7/14/2012 9:41:36 AM)

Some of the bonkerness Mormans and Scientologists
share is they are cults/religions that could
almost surely not have been cooked up
anywhere but America. Throw in the
Jehovah Witnesses to.

Winterapple -> RE: Will Bain be Willards Watergate? (7/14/2012 9:48:22 AM)

Yes, he was a science fiction writer.
Fascinating that the outer space
Scientology gods would choose a
science fiction writer to be their
talking salamander. Convenient to.

Similar thought patterns must be
coming from those aliens who visit
Whitly Schreiber or whatever his
name is. The sci fi writer who claims
to have been abducted by aliens.

mnottertail -> RE: Will Bain be Willards Watergate? (7/14/2012 10:18:20 AM)

So....the question remains, how bad is Willard kissing his sister on this one?

We're not running a competition for how wrong you can be, sweetie.
Bare Faced Messiah is an exposes of Hubbard published after his death. While Hubbard did publish an awful lot after his death, that was not one of his books.
The FBI labelled HUbbard as a mental case due to his tendency to try to shop professional rivals or anybody else he didn't like as communists. It was nothingbto do with his fiction, which they couldn't be any more arsed with than anybody else could at that point.
There's a tendency, due to Hubbard's status as a cult founder, to try to retcon him as a significant figure in golden age science fiction, rather than the third rate AE Van Vogt impersonator that he actually was. Hubbard is best remembered for two horror novellas, rather than his (fuckawful) science fiction by critics who can read.

Whitley Streiber.
One interesting thing about his alien friends with a taste for pegging people with no social skills, is that he'd published a short story (Pain) that has an alien dominatrix subjecting a failed writer to a similar abduction experience to the one he claims for himself in Communion. Streiber tried to sue Tom Disch for pointing this out, iirc.
