Status: offline 		No matter where Y/you may stand on the issue of race-based admissions policies in higher education, this case bears watching, partially to see which way the wind blows with the new Court.

Status: offline 		Is Affirmative Action still neccessary?
I thought it was a "hand up" for some people.
Specifically Blacks.
Now it seems that everyone is counted in it with the exception of White Males.
Just another govt. "program" which seeks to perpetuate itself?
Isn't 40 years of it enough?
That's the problem with the govt. Once they get us involved in something (Nato, UN, Trade Deals etc) they never want to get us (out) of it!
Again, the govt. just doesn't listen to The People.

To me Affirmative Action was a wonderful idea that failed. Instead of elimnating the race/sex issue, it has only focused more attention on those diffrences.
You truly want balanced, get rid of ALL referances to sex and race in enrollment paperwork and just let the stuidents accidemic achivements speak for themselves. With the current arrangement Affirmative Action basicaly says "you are (what ever minority) so just to compete with white males you HAVE to be given additional points, otherwise you will probably NOT make it in". So instead of forcing minorities to do better in school to increase there grades, it encourages them to just be slightly worse then there white conterparts. Now that makes Affirmative Action one of the most raciest/sexist systems out there.

Status: offline 		You are right. Studies now show that women are getting a higher percentage of collage degrees than their male counterparts. Women are also performing better at the high school level. The percentage of high school dropout rates are increasing for males and decreasing for females.

Status: offline 		I agree that this case bears watching, but it appears to be about public school districts setting quotas ala bussing, it doesn't seem to have anything to do with admissions to colleges.

*sigh* No wonder politics is in such a state ...

1. This is not an affirmative action case. It is in fact a very differant consideration than affirmative action. Though it is based on the same general principles (racial balance) the legal details at hand are quite differant than from an affirmative action case.

2. This is not about race based admissions to higher education. In fact, this is not about higher education at all. This is a case about public school bussing, not post-secondary education admissions.

3. You cannot judge how this Court will rule on race-based admissions by how they judge this case, except perhaps in a most generic sense. Public primary and secondary schools are constrained by a differant set of restraints than post-secondary schools. Plus most colleges and universities are private enterprises (even if they receive some public funding) and the two most recent additions to the court have made it clear from their past behavior that such private schools are not as restrained (one way or another) as government owned schools.

i graduated from a high school that was approximayely 85% non-white, and attended a state college with a 4% non-white student population.  i'd say s'thing needed to be done.  After Michigan's "quota" system was struck down by the High Court, the admissions committee crafted a"policy of diversity" which they thought met constitutional standards.  Now this new policy is under attack; and in the end, the New High Court may decided that no form of affirmative action will be constitutional. 
 
i'd say such a decision bodes ill for privacy rights, etc.
