ChatteParfaitt -> RE: Making a soft collar (7/16/2012 11:21:21 AM)

Any pattern that would work for a belt would work for a collar around the neck. Some caveats (as I don't know your level of sewing and design experience): the collar should be wide enough and firm enough not to stretch into the neck and cause irritation and constriction. It should fit well enough so that the collar does not twist. It should be of material that is easy on the skin and does not stretch. Speaking of material, soft and washable would be ideal. Remember, anything shiny of slinky will be harder to work with. I would recommend perhaps a (washable) brocade fabric for the outside (you should be able to find a cheap remnant at the sewing store, you won't need much fabric). A swatch of fake suede for the inside (nice and soft). To keep the collar firm and to retain shape after repeated washing (necks get sweaty -- even mine!) you should use interfacing. Use the strongest your sewing store has to offer. Now the only thing you need is some sort of faster. If you are going fancy fabric like the brocade, you need a fancy fastener, and they will have some great ones intended to be used as belt buckles. Again, careful measuring so the collar fits well will be key to success. You could also go velcro, or any of the other myriad fasteners available (even two snaps would do). If you want in a ring in the front middle of the collar (or at various points) you can get O-rings at the hardware store. Make tabs to attach them with your faux suede, reinforced with some good strong stitching. This sounds like a fun project. Takes pics when you are done (please). OH, and welcome to the discussion side of CM.
