I have a set of four miniature padlocks. All the locks look identical, as do their keys. I'd like to label them in some way that I can quickly tell which key goes to which lock. I'm thinking about marking the locks with a drop of enamel paint, different colors for each lock, but matching those colors to their respective keys. But I think the paint will eventually chip, and besides, those keys are awfully tiny. Does anyone have any ideas for a more efficient way of labeling these locks and keys? Spy

You could try liquid latex. It comes in different colors. Dip the top of each key in a different color and part of the lock itself along the top curve in the color which matches the key.

I use nail polish or paint to label my keys

Hi Spy, You might be able to use a small file, and file the same design on the lock and matching key. Or better yet, get a pack of locks, that use the same key. I have a set of 2 that use the same key, and I am sure you get more sets, like for Luggage, that all use the same key. Not Locked up for now, BalletBob P.S. Nail Polish was my first choice too, and does last long.

We keep the keys in the locks until we are ready to use them (that way we know at the start we have the key) Then each key is put in a labeled baggie (R wrist, L ankle, etc.)

If you don't mind making some noise, you could always use an etcher. You can pick one up pretty cheap at a hardware store like Lowe's and they last a lot longer than any paint or ink.

Police Depts. usually will lend one so that you can mark electronic goods (at home - wink,wink, nudge, nudge) for ID purposes in case of theft. Oh, do that TOO.

You could just order a set of miniature padlocks that are keyed identically. A while ago I got 10 for about $30.

Yeah, i just use locks with matched identical keys. Makes things so much easier being able to use the same key for each lock. Seems pretty damn complicated when having to faff about with a keyring a janitor would be jealous of.

Amazon is perfect for this actually. I got 12 Master padlocks that are all keyed the same for $25. I keep one key in a hidden place and my son has a key just in case. Then, if there is an emergency, there is no fumbling to get the slave unlocked. And if I dropped the copy I had out for a session, I know where there are two more. Sadly, 12 locks is not enough by a long shot though.

Most locksmith places have steel punches, with letters, and numbers. Have each lock and key pair done. Might cost a bit, but it is generally very reasonable. Especially if you are buying the locks and spare keys there. limpshorty

We just have keyed alike locks, as it saves much trouble. A locksmith can order or rekey as many as you want.

It might be a bit late now, but next time why not order locks all keyed to the same key? That way, you'll have the right key whichever lock it is.

Next time I will do that. I picked these up at a hardware store and at the time wasn't thinking about the confusion that could arise. In any event there are two pairs, and the paired ones do share a key, so at least I only have to differentiate between two pairs of locks instead of four individual ones. Spy

Be careful how you encode what they open. FDTL (front door top lock) isnt even good enough, come up with a code. no sense making it easy if someone finds them or what not.
