I'm not allowed near sharp, pointy items.

Which reminds me, I have to grab the teen one of these days and have him sharpen the knives. I own the fancy Chefs Choice sharpener and am probably the only person whose knives get duller after I use it instead of sharper. But the teen's good at it.

I wonder will it only work on straight edged blades? my kitchen knives have those teethy looking edges. It seems to me that using this method would be counter-productive...

Spot on, Top. OPs link shows a McGyver sharpening stone... nothing that different from a barbers hone or a chef's steel.

Serrated edges require something different, since as you pointed out, the end result would damage the edge.

Excellent. I'll have to try that on my blunt crossbow bolts. God, those children in the playground opposite my house have hard skulls.

Thanks for the tip! I will have to try this and see if it works better than my sharpening steel I have that came with my knife set...although I have read that sooner or later you do have to get them professionally sharpened..mine have gone years without that yet though and while they are not dull they are not as sharp as they could be....PS....I have one of those Chef's Sharpener machines too but it never worked for me that well and mine is one of the first models they put out!

I hear my knives crying out in the kitchen to stop the abuse!

I know the exact device you are talking about. Good knives, treated well, will last you a lifetime and your grandkids will fight over them as heirlooms. Use one of those sharpeners and they'll be ruined in a decade.
