there are many kinds.. the most common are plain white safety candles.. always test them on yourself.. each candle burns differently..never use just walmart type scented candles.. and for colors and scent uselow temp soy based candles.. color in parafin can cause it to burn hotter .. and we dont like to blister a sub .. burns are a bitch.
http://www.bdsmwaxplay.com/candles.htm is an online source

Bees wax candles will burn too hot, so avoid them. Plain white parrafin is best. and I find the ones you get in the glass cylinders for like a rememberence candle , or the parrifin dipping kits the best. A good friend of mine, uses the parafin hand dip with a turkey baster to drip and draw pretty designs all over a sub.

Or. . .you can look for actual low temperature candles. I usually find them in adult stores. If you do a search online for them you will come up with plenty of results for candles that are designed to be used for wax play.

You can find some very nice smelling parafin-free candles at jennioriginals.com.

Thank you again. The remembrance candles best suit me as my town doesn't have such a thing as an adult store and purchasing online is no longer an option...

This was to be my next thread. Thanks MiladyElaine. I've been interested in wax play for a while now, just was a bit scared of very hot burns. Great information, thanks everyone.

Plain white parrafin candles work best. Have a large table or shelf nearby you can set the candle down on and be certain there's nothing flammable above or next to the candle. It is, after all, an open flame. That also means no flammable liquids in open containers nearby either.

One can drip the candle directly from the wick, but that makes for hotter wax. I like to let the candle form a little puddle of wax first and then I drip a bit at a time from about two to four feet above. The higher you hold the dripping candle, the cooler the wax when it strikes flesh. Always test candles on your own self before using them on subs. One technique I employ with nervous or low-pain-tolerance subs is to drip quite a bit of wax, a bit at a time, building up, from a great height. Once I have a ;ayer of wax already in place, I can start dripping *over* it at lower altitudes, warming the wax layers. It's a bit less scary for the sub.

A good way to protect nipples and other sensitive areas is to first rub them thoroughly with ice cubes, getting them chilly, and then layer them with high-dropped wax to form a protective "cap" of wax, and then do the lower-down dripping over the barrier.

Always keep ice on hand in case of an accidentally inflicted burn. I hate playing with wax if there's music in the background as I want to hear my submissive's voice and breathing! If they're still yipping six to ten seconds after the wax is applied, you may have an unintentinal burn. apply ice over the wax (don't try to peel it off if it's on thin skin) and cool the area. Remove any wax over a burn *carefully*! Never 'pop' blisters as they are the body's protection. Until it is burst, the area under a blister is sterile.

Waxing and pulling out pubic hair (or any body hair) can be very painful! My own sub, who is a bit of a pain slut, went over the edge during a regular waxing, when we pulled her pubes out with the wax as it came off! Surprise! As a domme... I *hate* surprises!! :) We had to "talk her down" and get her calm before we could get the rest of the wax off.

I learned wax play from Tony deBlase. He was excellent at it and I still have the autographed clothespin from that party!

If you'd like some color in your candles. Hanukkah candles are made of paraffin. Also come in several colors. Quite reasonable on the pocketbook as well.

I like using parrafin baths. (Those designed for facials) The wax comes in a variety of colors and you can get "candle color" at any craft shop that sells candle making supplies. The wax can be purchased in quantity from any beauty supply. The wax melts at a low temp and has conditioning oils for the skin. In addition it is intended to be used on human skin.

I have several electric baths I use with a variety of different wax colors. A parrafin bath, turned on LOW will allow you to dip and pour wax over your sub, creating castings.

For easy clean up, use an inexpensive shower curtain liner under your sub, or the disposable plastic drop clothes. (I prefer the latter as I can cut the drop cloth to size and just throw it away when done.)

Have fun

Ms Sandi

Also, AVOID SCENTED CANDLES! [i was shocked no one mentioned this in the 14 responses i read] They burn hotter then parafin...

and if you are using the tall glass 'catholic' candles, you can melt the whole 'tube' down in a double boiler on the stove to avoid having to leave an open flame while waiting for the wax to melt down..DON'T FORGET TO PULL OUT OR WATCH FOR THE METAL BASE AT THE BOTTOM INSIDE THAT THE WICK IS ATTACHED TO! talk about an ugly burn! The color of the wax in these types of candles does affect how hot they burn - black and red being the hottest...

The cheap candles from IKEA are hotter then hell. Unless that is what you are going for, I would avoid them. While the price is right the pain is not always so good~

Remember the more layers of wax you apply the more "pockets of air" you are creating. This traps the heat with each layer, so the more you apply the more closely you should be with your bottom/sub. We have found that smearing the wax to thin it helps with this some...

oh and on the pubes issue -- TRY APPLYING BABYOIL, MINERAL OIL OR OLIVE OIL on them first and have a comb nearby...it makes it much easier to remove, but the oils can heat up - so again; check on your victim regularly~

good luck on your fun~ Lv M

Yesterday while at a friends, looking through an adam and eve book. They had a scented candle in there. Specifically designed for wax play, also it doubled as a massage oil.

Something about this works because it is soy based. Anyone heard of these before?

How does it become a massage oil though? I'm assuming once you pour it on and try to work it into the skin you aren't going to have a wax candle on your back, correct?
