It isn't a specific day for everyone to go and donate, but to celebrate the people who do, to make more people aware of the advances and hopes to bring awareness to the importance of voluntary blood donation.

Do you know I went to give blood about 6 months ago...and they wouldnt take it cause I have Multiple sclerosis....which isnt even a blood related disease....But i guess cause there is no known cure for it they don't want to risk it can be carried thru the blood stream...i just thought that it was odd. when I was diagnosed with MS noone ever told me that I wouldnt be able to give blood anymore............oh well!

Good morning, gina . I had never heard of that before, either; I tried to google up something on it, the only thing I came up with is that they aren't sure where MS comes from, so yeah, I suppose it's a protective measure.

I can no longer donate, sadly.  There is some virus or other that I've never had, which most people have had.  They used my blood for neonates, because of the lack of this virus.  However, my red blood cells do not replace themselves as quickly as most people and donating every 56 days was too often.  It made me quite anemic.  My doctor put the kabash on donating, but I still did, just not as often.  Until the day I passed out.  And the next time I gave, I nearly passed out.  Now the Blood Center won't let me give anymore.

Sooooooooo...for those of you that can, please do so.  Somewhere out there, a life can be saved because of you.

I think that it has to do with the RH Factor. I am not sure what that is, but I know that you are either RH positive or RH negative. I forget which one I am but they told me when I donate that my blood can be used specifically for infants. I know that I walk out of the place feeling ten feet tall because I know that some little one will benefit.
