Hillwilliam -> WMD in the Mideast. (7/22/2012 7:09:41 AM)

A mideast Despot who is ordering the murder of his own people has the largest stockpile of nerve and mustard gas in the mideast.

http://zeenews.india.com/news/world/syria-terrorists-may-get-stockpile-of-nerve-gas_787024.html

Where are the Right Wingers calling for an invasion?
What's the difference between Assad and Hussein?

Oh yeah, this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Syria

"Syria is a relatively small oil producer, accounting for just 0.5 percent of the global production in 2010"

Aylee -> RE: WMD in the Mideast. (7/22/2012 7:17:08 AM)

Are you aware of how much oil/fuel that the US can produce?

As far as the asshole that has the nerve gas/WMD? Kill him. Kill him now.

TheHeretic -> RE: WMD in the Mideast. (7/22/2012 7:46:16 AM)

Surely you don't still think WMD had anything to do with Iraq, do you?

You've got to quit watching so much Fox News, dude.

Poor Owner59... He just can't handle things that don't fit inside the talking points emails.

Sorry, dudette, but I never supported the invasion to begin with, and never bought into the WMD excuse. Once we were in, we owned it, and that was another thing entirely.

But if Bush II was such a chimpy-dumbass, what does that say about all the Democrats in Congress who bought it hook, line, and sinker, and voted to authorize the war?

Touche, one subtle snark that goes totally over most people's heads deserves another.[8D]

Owner59 -> RE: WMD in the Mideast. (7/22/2012 8:24:09 AM)

WMD is the subject, loser.....

The reason congress approved the invasion is because you and your ilk commited fraud and treason and who knows what else, to trick folks.....dude...

And the "once we were in" crock.......was just one more ruse to force our GIs into killing zones.

TheHeretic -> RE: WMD in the Mideast. (7/22/2012 8:26:20 AM)

So with that out of the way, should we talk about what, if anything, the US can or should do about the civil war/uprising in Syria?

Hillwilliam -> RE: WMD in the Mideast. (7/22/2012 8:27:18 AM)

Actually, owner. I was being a bit too subtle for most folks once again pointing out that, despite all the moralizing about our "adventures on foreign shores being purely humanitarian [8|] ". It's all about one thing, resources, particularly oil.

Oppressed people who are sitting on top of a huge oil reserve get 'liberated'. Oppressed people who are sitting on top of noting valuable get.....oppressed.

Rich is the only one who picked up on it and was just as subtle shooting back. Goodern too.

That`s a pretty reasonable observation.

When the Syrian civil war started.......we had just intervened in Libya......to the chagrin of our extremist-righties here.

We heard comments like "oh, Obama can go to Libya and Egypt but won`t help the Syrians".Finding out why this was so, seemed less important than bashing the president.

One of the reasons Mubarak is in jail is because his sons didn`t become military officers and Mubarak didn`t have a family/clan dominated government/Army, like Assad has.

Saddam did the same by having his sons and blood relatives in charge of everything.

When one family controls every aspect of a nation from it`s government to the military to the police and secret police to loyal armed militias,it`s pretty much impossible to remove them if they are willing to do anything to stay in power.

Unfortunately in Syria,we`ve been unable to help,yet,b/c there is not free-Syrian army......yet.

But the president has been affective on the international front in isolating Syria down to just a few countries. As well as talking the ruskies into taking their attack copters back to Russia.

There are good sized chunks of the Lebanese border now under rebel control which means the flow of weapons to them will swell.

It wasn`t clear when the Syrian civil war would end early on.Of course we all would have liked it if Assad had steped down and retired but after commiting his mass killings of civilians......he was a marked man....no one there was going to just take it lying down.

It`s over for Assad and his ilk. It`s just a matter of time but I pray that the wait is short one.

We NEVER step in?

Again, what about South Korea. What about Europe in WW I and WW II and the cold war. What about the people of South Vietnam.

Pull your head out of your ass, step away from the HuffnPoo bag and think for yourself

Our military didnt help the Japanese after their terrible tsunami? Or Indonesia?

And now that you bring it up, where is Obama on Haiti

It isn't just natural resources, Hill, there has to be some compelling reason, and the humanitarian causes get subjected to a brutal cost/benefit analysis.

Kuhdaffy was easy. I'm still puzzling over why President Obama chose to create the remote control exception, instead of just walking it through Congress, though. The best answer I can come up with is that he thought his political capital from bin Laden wouldn't go stale, and he wanted to keep it tucked away for the campaign.

Syria is not easy. We've sent all the nasty notes the State Dept. can compose, and we can push and poke a little from the international soapboxes. We can secretly ship some arms, but that only helps turn an almost civil war into a bigger one. Then what?

atursvcMaam -> RE: WMD in the Mideast. (7/22/2012 11:35:07 AM)

No way there are WMD in Syria, that would be like us (the USA) setting up an interrogation camp in Cuba for a level of deniability.. Don't be silly.

I agree. Oppressed people sitting on huge oil reserves where the rulers are "friends of the west" also get oppressed.

Intervention in Syria risks a clash with Iran, neither would have a good outcome. The proximity of both to Israel, makes intervention such as that in Libya problematic. I think what is now playing out between the west and Russia/China are the last vestiges of the cold war.

of course, and no one from afghanistan would hide out for years in pakistan. There's no way that a nomadic culture would cross borders once they are established. Really.

Bottom line though is that when the contributors (not the actual senators and congresspersons) want something, they get it and they use their media outlets to tell the weak minded minions what to say about it.

You and I seem to be the only ones who saw thru the OP. (ok, you did cause I wrote it)

Syria is easier now than Iraq was just before we invaded. Assad IS slaughtering people and has lots of WMD. Hussein at some time in the past HAD slaughtered his people and mayyyyybe.

If Syria had the oil reserves of Kuwait, we'd be there in a heartbeat.

Sanity -> RE: WMD in the Mideast. (7/22/2012 12:10:18 PM)

Risks "a clash with Iran"?

We could destroy Iran several times over within minutes. Even considering just war vs. Iran using mere conventional weapons, Iran is no superpower.

So, care to take another wild assed guess as to why we are sitting this one out?

Heres a clue:
