i am not familiar with the meaning of this. what does it mean?

NiceButMeanGirl -> RE: vanilla (7/22/2012 4:52:34 PM)

As far as I know, it means "NOT kinky." That's how I use it anyway & how I've heard others use it....to differentiate between kinky and non-kinky people.

NBMG

Vanilla = Not kinky / interested in BDSM or plain uninformed / unaware of BDSM.

SWDesertDom -> RE: vanilla (7/22/2012 5:40:28 PM)

Vanilla, a rare and expensive spice made from the seed pod of the vanilla orchid (Vanilla planifola). It is very difficult to cultivate on a commercial basis, and it's cultivation and preparation is labor intensive, making it the second most expensive spice in the world, after saffron.

For some strange reason this expensive and sought after spice has become used as a term for "plain."

sheisreeds -> RE: vanilla (7/22/2012 5:47:49 PM)

My understanding is it that the idea more came out of ice cream flavors vanilla vs rocky road, etc.

Kana -> RE: vanilla (7/22/2012 10:14:59 PM)

Nilla came from boring.
Could been worse, they coulda called it Ranch, after the dressing :-)

Thaz -> RE: vanilla (7/23/2012 1:15:33 AM)

There's vanilla from Wall-mart and there's deluxe, from the pod fresh made by hand vanilla. It doesnt have to be boring. But it ISNT chocolate/chilli/cherry with vodka.

LillyoftheVally -> RE: vanilla (7/23/2012 2:13:32 AM)

I don't like the way the term is often used. I like to think it means people who do not identify as being part of BDSM as there are plenty of folks out there doing what we do without naming it like we do. The problem is sometimes people use it in a more derogatory way as though it is the unenlightened and slightly dull.

I believe it's an old gay term for "straights" or heteros....

Anyway, it basically refers to the greater majority - the mundane or everyday; what "everyone" does etc. So it's a borrowed term that works for we BDSMers, too, to differentiate in the same way.

Focus.

sheisreeds -> RE: vanilla (7/23/2012 4:24:26 AM)

Though where did vanilla get defined as boring?

Just wondering how far back that goes.

Other posters are right it used to be exotic.

Killerangel -> RE: vanilla (7/23/2012 4:38:08 AM)

Welcome to the boards Butterflying. After seeing your journal on your profile I think you are asking about the term vanilla as it pertains to the designation under your avatar here on the boards. You seemed to think you were labeled as vanilla on your profile, you aren't, it's just a silly thing on the boards to show how many posts you've made. As you make more posts the icon picture and word changes. So after 25 posts I think you'll move up from the vanilla cone to the next level and I can't remember what that one is, but hey, it just changes the higher you go. People who go to your profile don't see the icons on here, they just show up here when you post on threads.

Moonlightmaddnes -> RE: vanilla (7/23/2012 9:08:43 AM)

Speaking of which, I am almost out. Thanks for reminding me.

Vanilla is non kinky. I cant call it boring though because vanilla is yummy in cookies and cakes.

seasnail -> RE: vanilla (7/23/2012 9:23:07 AM)

i got it how about "rocky road" on the way to the "ranch" where they serve vanilla ice cream before kinky way fun sex? or maybe serve the vanilla ice cream on the one you are having kinky good fun sex on...now that kinky and sticky. [:)]

MalcolmNathaniel -> RE: vanilla (7/23/2012 11:57:46 AM)

I like vanilla, cuz it's the finest of the flavors! - Bare Naked Ladies (One Week)

It was one of the first flavors synthesized in a lab. Vanilla was (and still is) an extremely expensive spice. The faux-vanilla was cheap to produce and rapidly became the norm for ice cream. Because of it's ubiquity it became the term used for 'standard' sex.

Another way to define it: sex without rope-burns, chocolate and ghost peppers. Oh, great, I just turned myself on. Any of you women interested in rope-burns and chocolate?
