The Boy Scouts of America has reaffirmed a discriminatory policy that keeps "open or avowed homosexuals" from being members or leaders.

They seem to think that nobody will notice how much harm this policy can have on young, gay Americans--so many of whom already face bullying in school.

But hundreds of thousands of equality supporters have already signed petitions - and now it's up to us to dial up the pressure on BSA to reverse this awful decision.

Lessons in leadership and skill-building are valuable. Lessons in division and intolerance are just plain wrong.

Tell the BSA to drop their misguided and hurtful policy. Send your message now.

Sign the petition: https://secure3.convio.net/hrc/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=1479

Or do one better: start your own boy scouts group without such discrimination. Competition does work correctively.

My view is that if you have a private club and wish to leave people out, you should have nothing to do the government funding or property.

The city of San Diego leases part of Balboa Park for $1 per year for Camp Balboa and the San Diego Imperial Council.

quote:

In 2003, Judge Napoleon A. Jones Jr. of the United States District Court for the Southern District of California ruled that the Boy Scouts of America is, by its own admission, a religious organization — and therefore that the non-market rate lease was in violation of the Establishment Clause of the Constitution. A subsequent settlement between the ACLU and San Diego provided for the Scouts' continued ability to use the facilities.

While the City of San Diego had been a co-defendant, after the 2003 decision and a failed appeal the city council withdrew from the lawsuit and agreed to a $950,000 settlement to the ACLU to cover legal fees. The City Attorney issued a statement regarding the decision, stating that "During the course of the case, however, and without forewarning the City as to its position, the Boy Scouts admitted in court documents that it was in fact a ‘religious organization.’” and that “The Boy Scouts have repeatedly and pointedly refused to support the City in helping to pay any of the potential attorney’s fees involved in this case. They want the City taxpayers to continue to argue the case even though they have acknowledged that they are a religious organization and even though they refuse to share in the potentially enormous attorney’s fee award that will be ultimately awarded to plaintiffs who have already prevailed in Judge Jones’ ruling noted above.”

So, not only do they get a (basically) free chunk of prime land in a city park, the tax payers of San Diego get to foot the bill for their legal fees because of their practices.

once again, Oside, I so agree...

Meanwhile, the Girl Scouts are under fire for allowing TGs...

Here's a petition in support of the Girl Scouts allowing transgendered children: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/thanks-girl-scouts-this-year-im-eating-thin-mints-for-equal-rights/

While you're at it, what about a petition to the IRS to abolish their tax exemption for child endangerment for teaching scouts to be bigots?

Just wondering...do you really think they would be any safer in the Scouts? Maybe they would be safer starting their own organization of scouting…at least until social mores change...which they slowly are with each generation.

I just don’t think the time is here yet.

Not to derail this thread into politics, but BSA is the official social program of the Mormon church.

TheHeretic -> RE: Dear Boy Scouts: It's 2012. Not 1912. (7/23/2012 6:55:10 PM)

Cool. They can print out the petitions, and use them for fire-starting practice.

Regardless of the left leaning and open mindedness here is a simple fact. It might not be a fact that you agree with or that you want to accept but it is true.

The Boy scouts are a FAITH Based organization. That means that they teach religion as well as knot tying.

The Bible, The Torah and the Koran all three forbid the practice of Homosexuality. Which is why I scratch my heads at some gay people I know going to Church. God in all three of the major religions forbids homosexuality.

So why are gay people trying to force their views on an organization that clearly doesn't want them or accept them.

'If a man lies with a woman during her monthly period and has sexual relations with her, he has exposed the source of her flow, and she has also uncovered it. Both of them must be cut off from their people. Leviticus 20:18 (NIV version)

The Bible has all types of laws, it seems that people cherry pick which ones to follow or that god really means. I don't think that this argument holds much for the Boy Scouts or any religious denomination...

Sauce for the goose is Sauce for the Gander. I admit that the bible has lots of laws but at the same time there is a reason for them. Do you really want to have sex with a woman on her period EEEWWWW NASTY!

FR

This former Boy Scout (a patrol leader, no less) finds it a bit amusing that homosexuality triggers such a reaction in an organization likely founded by a closeted gay man.

It isn't that it is nasty, it is forbidden... period. End of story, god says so. Personally, I have had sex with women on their period for thirty years, shrug. Just breaking another of god's laws...

For Christ's sake: if your balls have dropped to an extent that you know what you want to fuck or be fucked by, you're too old for the fucking scouts already.
(Still, gay bashing shitehawks...)

a FAITH Based organization.

This is something based on individual belief, and individual morality.

Rest assured that God did not put you or anyone else on this Earth to decide on the hierarchy of beliefs and morality of everyone. You even got a Messiah who gave you a set of teachings and the other half of the Holy Bible - it's called the New Testament.

Sorry but quoting from the previous Old Testament doesn't wash. It's not faith, it's not religion, it's bigotry and it's homophobia.

And no matter how many times you repeat it it will never become a fact and will be nothing more than your own personal belief.
