mcbride -> A Republican encounters Canadian health care (7/24/2012 1:09:09 PM)

These boards have seen so much completely fictional claptrap about Canada's health care -- death panels! waiting lists! -- that I wondered what happens when a Republican gets first-hand experience:

"When I moved to Canada in 2008, I was a die-hard conservative Republican. So when I found out that we were going to be covered by Canada's Universal Health Care, I was somewhat disgusted."

I think Americans think universal health care will be very costly,.. and imo, as a Canadian living (temporarily) in the US and seeing how complicated they try to make everything.. imo it will turn out to be very costly and not work anywhere close to how it was sold to Americans.. imo, they will screw it up majorly.. its just the nature of US govt..

but i dont think i have read about death panels or anything majorly negative about Canada's system on this site.. there are waiting lists tho.. its not a perfect system but it works relatively well and relatively affordably..

Unfortunately Mcbride, the people who need to read this wont..
ive had two children here and I experienced exactly what she did.... but people do not want to see that.even tho the ACA makes things closer to UHC, theres a LONG way to go

Allo Tj:)
i have a question for ya... is it the government making it complicated,or the insurance, big pharma etc that is running the health system right now.??
Ive never had to deal "with the government" except with regards to a medication that wasnt covered on my drug plan, which happened to be offered thru another agency dealing with high cost meds. All other times Ive had to deal just with doctors and their office staff.

OMG!

"The country mandates one year of paid maternity leave, meaning a woman having a baby gets an entire year after the birth of her baby to recover and parent her new baby full-time, while still receiving 55% of her salary and their job back at the end of that year. Either parent can use the leave, so some split it, with one parent staying at home for 6 months and the other staying at home for 6 months. I could hardly believe my ears when I first heard it. In America, women routinely had to return to work after 6 weeks leave, many times unpaid. Many American women lost their jobs when becoming pregnant or having a baby. I knew people who had to go back to work 2 weeks after giving birth just to hang onto their job and continue making enough money to pay the bills."

trying to compare Canadian govt to US govt is like comparing apples to oranges.. In my experience and observation, the US govt at all levels from the Feds down to City Hall makes everything they touch more complicated, time consuming and expensive.. I recall reading that Obamacare bill was 1,000 pages long.. and look where its gone, to going thru court challenges and now another election to see if it will even survive.. The HMOs, big pharma, etc will make US universal health care much more expensive than it needs to.. today before it even takes effect, it costs twice as much for the same medical surgery or treatment in the US than it does in Canada..

So, imo, the US govt makes it complicated and the HMOs, big pharma, etc make it expensive.. that makes it a double-whammy.. [8|]

I dont recall that much time for maternity leave in Canada but i guess its changed.. understandable actually, since like the US, Canada's birth rate has dropped and now is low. But to support the system, you need new taxpayers to replace exiting taxpayers/people retiring... so perhaps the govt is in this way trying to encourage people to have babies?

thanks:)
I know after I had my youngest, the old man got 16 weeks...but he did'nt use it all, but boy did it help emotionally , physically with the late nights, feedings and usual stuff.

Ooo, I get to disagree! Will the hard-core ideologues be swayed? Of course not, and I don't care.

If a few undecided types read it, if a few Republicans take in what one of their own had to say, that's double Club Zed points. :)

After studying several aspects of the matter, I would have to say that government is playing a big part in screwing things up. A lot of the procedures and policies that the insurance companies now follow were started by CMS.

tj, you're right, it's complicated. The for-profit care industry in the states will fight to the death, and make it hugely expensive, even before anyone can whisper the words "single-payer". But that's no reason to stop trying to deliver what the American people need and deserve, and given what they pay now, and the results they get, there's absolutely no reason to believe the result could possibly be worse, or more expensive, than what they have now.

And yes, sadly, "death panels" have made more than a few appearances on these boards. Just search the words "death panel" and Canada, and watch the hits pile up. For example:

death panels are an admitted fact:

i am waiting for the dust to settle to see.. if you have not lived in the US, you really dont know just how frustrating and bad they can make it... I knew it was no cake walk but now that i have been here for a while.. i am looking forward to when i leave.. for now, i gotta bite the bullet..

If his head didn't explode, Scanners style, on seeing how well socialist medicare nonsense works for people who use it, then this is a non story.
He can fuck off and die of cancer, and the crypto commie freeloaders will treat him for that instead of telling him he'd used used up his medical insurance payments talking to a specialist and could die in the gutter or they'd sue him.

JeffBC -> RE: A Republican encounters Canadian health care (7/24/2012 4:13:10 PM)

I have this same thought. I'm an American living in Canada and I'm covered under their universal health care. I know a lot of friends who are. I've heard a lot of stories. I have yet to hear anything in the American media that even remotely resembles the reality.

Worst war story I've heard so far? Lengthy delays on non-critical MRI's (8 months). However, I've also seen the system adapt quickly to obviously urgent conditions. What's so utterly astonishing is how vastly cheaper it is. I can't seriously imagine anyone having been under both systems and not seeing how incredibly superior the Canadian one is. And heck, I was one of the privileged... I had a corporate health insurance package back in the states.

Lucylastic -> RE: A Republican encounters Canadian health care (7/24/2012 4:17:46 PM)

I agree, the wait times can be lengthy, Last year I had to wait three months, to get mine, it varies on the province, the city, the hospital. But since last year, the wait times have lessened considerably, I got one for next month after my docs appointment last week.

This is news? You'd have been dead before you escaped across the border if you'd not...

You are in BC and BC has it a bit harder than some other provinces.. its population is older, more seniors which means higher medical needs and lower tax income, so BC struggles with finances. And not long ago BC was a "have not" province due to NDP mismanagement.. I read about a scientist that moved from BC to Alberta cuz Alberta covered a type of expensive treatment for his autistic son, whereas BC didnt, saying it was experimental.. Alberta is a rich province due to the oil thing and so it can offer a more extensive medical coverage, and too, Alberta's population is younger so do not cost as much (medically) as seniors do.. So it does vary from province to province.. Like i said, its not a perfect system but it does work pretty well..

If you are in BC you sometimes need to make a few concessions for living in the best, most beautiful place in Canada.. [:)]

If the US system was so great, then they wouldnt be trying to change it, now would they? [;)]

Although, Lucy, I do notice we haven't have any visits yet from the Collarme chapter of AHFARAPP
(American Heroes For Assault Rifles and Against Poor People), coming in to challenge their fellow Republican. I hope the undecideds make a note. :)
