LizDeluxe -> Why are there no gay Muppets? (7/24/2012 5:50:47 PM)

The Henson company announced that they are cutting all future ties with Chick-Fil-A due to the latter's recent stance against gay marriage. If the Henson company is so pro-LGBT why are there no gay Muppets? I'm not aware of any although I have always had my suspicions about Bert and Ernie.

I say put your money where your mouth is, Henson folks.

Bert and Ernie aren't a couple?
Shit.

I thought they did make Bert and Ernie gay?

I know Animal is into kink. You can see his chains he wears on his arms. [:D]

LadyPact -> RE: Why are there no gay Muppets? (7/24/2012 6:01:34 PM)

Maybe they think such discussions are the parents responsibility?

Sorry, I'm not in the position to take swipes at the Muppets. Henson has done quite a bit for children of the military and special programs for kids of the deployed.

Moonhead -> RE: Why are there no gay Muppets? (7/24/2012 6:05:50 PM)

I think he did a lot for any kid who ever watched the Muppets or Sesame Street. The military thing, admirable as it is, is just extra icing on that particular cake.

Because sex is not a good subject to talk about with 5 year old children?

Other than Miss Piggy and Kermit, did any of the Muppets show any interest in the opposite or same sex? Gonzo had his hens, but they never went with the sex angle. Because it was, you know, a show for kids.

Moonhead -> RE: Why are there no gay Muppets? (7/24/2012 6:24:42 PM)

I really can't think of any muppet sex offhand*, but surely Liz's point about showing couples stands regardless of that?

*(though there's bound to be all sorts of slash...)

The Muppet Show had its moments... Sesame Street was after my time, but Bert & Ernie? Absolutely!

While geared for adults, kids were/are a huge audience for the Muppets- so really, I don't think having any characters that were flamboyantly out of the closet (everything in kid shows are exaggerated) would have been appropriate. Just my opinion.

They've already had Miss Piggy and Kermit be in a long standing relationship, so if that doesn't express their acceptance of "non-traditional" relationships, I don't know what would. Burt and Ernie also go without saying.

If I had to take a guess though, I'd hedge my bets with Janice.

I own "The Great Muppet Caper" VHS, and can remember her saying, "Look, Mother. It's my life. OK. So if I want to live on a beach and walk around naked..."

Not that exhibitionism has anything to do with that (i honestly just found it hilarious).

Janis was modeled after the confirmed bisexual Janis Joplin and rumored experimental Mick Jagger, so its possible Muppet Janis could have straddled the fence.

They don't go around with straight plastered on their backs either...It is a children's show and sexual orientation would not be appropriate...they are just Muppets.

FrostedFlake -> RE: Why are there no gay Muppets? (7/24/2012 8:55:38 PM)

It's not just a kids show, it has to pass Moms' Alarm System as well, while entertaining her also. Of course, there are several topics that will not be discussed. The wonder of the program is the topics it DID raise. Often subliminally. Example : Oscar the Grouch is homeless, for Christ sake. Just outside the door. They showed that at a time anyone living outdoors was a BUM, but Oscar is not a bum. He is one of the people who live on Sesame Street. What's going on there?

In a similar way, Bert and Ernie spend all their time together. This is as plain to see as Oscar, and discussed exactly as much. Is the same thing going on?

Is it not a calculated case of you have to already be paying attention for this stuff to register?

Getting down to brass tacks, is it not a calculated case of lessons being taught which do not make their impact fully felt until years later when a grown child meets circumstance addressed in passing on PBS? Controversial lessons, like; maybe homeless people are not really invisible and maybe they deserve some respect. Like; maybe gay people are likable and not so different from anyone else after all. And so on. You know. The sorts of lesson that would get the PTA up in arms. In 'defense' of 'the children'.

brilliant post, FF.

littlewonder -> RE: Why are there no gay Muppets? (7/24/2012 9:12:40 PM)

Oscar's home was in the trashcan and below it but he was a slob and grouchy. He was never meant to come across as homeless. I can remember watching it all the time as a kid and when other characters would talk to Oscar he would always tell them to wait a second while he went into his home to get something for the person. And if I remember correctly there were a few times when a few of the muppets would have tea with Oscar in his home which leads me to believe there was an underground home somewhere. At least that's how it always came across to me as a kid.

stellauk -> RE: Why are there no gay Muppets? (7/24/2012 9:40:45 PM)

I'm another one who says leave them alone.

But then again I regard Henson every bit as iconic as those behind Looney Tunes and Warner Brothers cartoons when it comes to American culture for kids. I don't think there's a kid on this planet who hasn't heard of the Muppets or Sesame Street.

For me there were none as LGBT friendly as The Banana Splits

I also had my suspicions about Batman and Robin. I mean come on, an eccentric millionaire who lived in a cave, wore black leather, and had a sidekick who wore pantie girdles and pantyhose?

Lucylastic -> RE: Why are there no gay Muppets? (7/25/2012 1:14:29 AM)

Sesame street was a mix of all kinds of people, from all kinds of backgrounds, with acceptance and discovery of "different concepts"different species, puppets, races, creeds, etc etc.
thats why Fox and idiots are now hating on them, they are liberal...they are about everyone living together no matter the differences we have.
Cant be having that can we..
purely sickening asshole bullshit

Winterapple -> RE: Why are there no gay Muppets? (7/25/2012 1:37:57 AM)

FR
Some redneck preacher did try to kick up
a scandal about Bert and Ernie being gay.
It was around the time Falwell decided that
Tinki Winki the purple Teletubbie was gay.
The response to the accusation was that
Bert and Ernie don't have sex because
they're you know ... Muppets.

Very few things in the world have
done more to promote cultural diversity
than Sesame Street. They've also
tackled subjects from breastfeeding to
death(Mr Hooper). So there might very
well be a Grover Has Two Moms episode
someday. I would think they would
address in terms of there being different
sorts of families.

All the Henson's are doing is declining
to do any promotional stuff with chick f.
It's unfortunate in one sense because
cf is one of the few fast food outlets to
make a real effort at offering healthier
food choices and have gluten free options.

Jim Henson was a brilliant man and his
contribution to popular culture is
enormous. Make gay marriage legal
already.
