I've been given an exciting/daunting task this week of acquiring a cane - our first one. My choice. So I've read up on what makes them good quality and such, but I'm a bit stuck on the sensation part of things. As I understand it, thinner is more stingy and thicker is more thuddy, right? Does the weight affect the sting/thud scale or just the intensity? Problem is, when I hear people talking about sting v thud, I don't really get it. Out of all of the impact play we've done I can't really think of anything that doesn't feel stingy. Lots of people seem to express a preference for thuddy pain, but I'm honestly not sure I can tell the difference - am I missing something obvious here? So I'm looking at canes and thinking of getting one listed as thuddy, but they all have scary names implying the pain will be much worse. Am I being naive? Should I just stick to a junior one? I am a huge wimp for pain in all it's forms, and wouldn't really call myself a masochist, so I am prepared for a rough time. I don't want to pick something super wimpy though, since that would defeat the object. I know this will get regular use whatever I get. I know none of you know me and what I can take, but I'd still love to hear people's experiences/preferences, from both ends of the stick, to help me pick.

Hmmm ..... You'd notice the difference between a stingy and a Thuddy cane for sure. But... So much of caning is in the technique of the person holding it... I would go for lighter / thinner (tendency to be stingy) initially. Out of interest... Do you have much experience of riding crops?

Larger diameter = thud. If that fails, try before you buy. Simple stuff.

[8D] My worst caning experience was with a thin whippy cane and best with an Italian riot baton (which left spectacular bruises) but there were two different men wielding them and baton guy knew how to warm up and whippy did not.

OP, I would need to perv you to get a handle on your location to help you with that part. ETA - OK, I did it anyway. Lessons in "try before you buy". Are you able to go to community events? Tops LOVE to show off their toys! Canes are pretty common. Ask other tops if you can try things out. Another thought. You can't swing a dead cat without finding someone in the community that sells toys. You have public dungeons. Try there as well.

Well it's always a privilege to be perved by you. In truth I've never been to a community event - husband suffers from the shyness and hates the idea (I know I know, we should try it) and there's no question of me going alone. That said I have my eye on this event where I'm sure people would give me some great advice, if only we can get a babysitter: http://www.brumbazaar.co.uk/ Kalikshama, I'm looking here, here and here but very much open to suggestions. If they look like cheap crap please tell me because I am completely clueless. I guess I will also look on fetlife to see if anyone can suggest a local toymaker.

I will try very hard to persuade him - he didn't sound keen last time it came up. Maybe I will get it as an early birthday present. I would also love to see a demo in just about anything out of curiosity.

I understand that going to an event if you are shy can be daunting, but (and this might make you get all twitchy..LOL) put it to him that it could offer him delicious ideas to use between the two of you! tries to hide the evil grin behind a facade of innocence

If I were presented with those three choices, I'd go with the 12mm-14mm Kooboo Cane I see Kooboo is a type of rattan. In general, I have a preference for natural over synthetic, but am not enough of an aficionado to advise you regarding the various materials. Since you are going for less stingy, steer away from anything that includes "whippy" in the description. As they say, beginner /= whimpy when it comes to canes: A thick and reasonably stiff cane, making it easy to control and recommended as a first cane for beginners. All canes are intense BDSM toys, however this is one of the least intense of the canes range.

If you dislike stingy, stay away from the lexan ones. Whippy in sound & feel. And like the others said, all canes will hurt so I wouldn't worry about feeling wimpy.

Caning is just really really different from anything else, just like a singletail/signal whip is different. There are a few of what I consider rattan LOGS floating around our scene that are "thuddy" in the way getting hit with a baseball bat is thuddy... Any comparison to a riding crop is just not sufficient, IMO. Really, don't expect THUD out of a cane, they're not made for it. Larger diameter is better and less "slicey", and yes, kooboo is great, as is any good quality rattan. NOT bamboo, that stuff splits and is literally dangerous if it does---and I don't say that particular D word lightly! Lexan, plastic, any synthetic, are just a whole other world. I'm getting a new one---fibreglass dipped in rubber!! (can you hear the squeee? can't wait to test it!!) Since you're not into the whole pain thing, what's the purpose of this activity? To see if you can shriek louder than a colicky baby? [8D]

then people are talking about stingy vs thuddy, they're usually talking about floggers. All canes are going to be stingy. I've never heard of one that is thuddy. But when it comes to floggers, the thinner and less tails the stingier it will be. The more tails and thicker, the more of a thuddy impact. I personally prefer thuddy. Master likes stingy though. [&:]

Thanks for all taking the time to give me some advice on this. LadyH: Yes that's pretty much it. Kind of an 'endure for me' sort of thing. I don't enjoy the physical sensation of the pain at the time, but do enjoy the lingering after pains as a reminder, and the whole sense of 'taking it' just to please him. Also I find that fear is very closely linked to arousal and if it was nice, it wouldn't be scary. It's nice when he lets his inner sadist out every now and then - I know he often tones it down to account for my wimpiness. Kalikshama/GreedyTop - he says we can go! He actually said 'it might be fun'! I guess a market type event is fairly low pressure. Better yet - if we can get an overnight babysitter we can book a hotel room for afterwards to, you know, try out any new toys in peace. Woo! (Now I just have to persuade him to go to the afterparty...)

When I was a sensation slut I LOVED caning, and the marks were the best part!! I got the best blood blister from my lexan cane! (okay, I am guessing that you don't live in that world... and you probably don't laugh, either? whoops! [:)])

Considering that you're in the UK, I would strongly advice you to check out this guy http://www.jacksfloggers.co.uk/. He's VERY helpful and makes sure you'll get exactly what you're looking for. He does custom sets cheaply and at VERY high quality. Most of the standard canes he's got on the site are with leather handles, but he does them also with nicely finished wooden handles (like the ones all the way at the bottom). His floggers are to die for, we're in the process of acquiring a very large matching set from him, with just about everything he's got on the site and a few other items, and I can't recommend him highly enough. I know he also does events in the UK, so he might even be at the Bazaar and otherwise you can mail him for his upcoming schedule. I know his workshop is in or near London, so if that's convenient for you, you could probably go by and try out a wide range of things together with your husband while having a little bit more privacy than at a public event.

Thank you. Oh, if you have a chance to go to that event you linked, that would be an awesome idea! I'm crossing My fingers for you on that one. It shouldn't be too tough on a shy person. I do have some of the rattan logs mentioned by Lady H as well as the smaller ones that most folks think of for the definition of cane. All of them are fun........ Well, for Me anyway.
